ASSESSMENT This is made up of : Visits to the families Attendance at seminars The Essay

The essay should be about 3000 words The essay should be a CRITICAL APPRAISAL and not simply a descriptive account of the family The grades available for each essay are : Excellent Satisfactory Unsatisfactory

The overall essay grade will be made up of considering the grade (excellent, satisfactory, borderline or unsatisfactory) allocated for the 5 headings :

1. Understanding of Family Placement Goals 2. Awareness of key concepts from theoretical teaching 3. Integration of the experiences of the family into the essay 4. Quality of evaluation of Family Placement 5. Presentation

The essays will be marked by your tutor and the overall comparability of marks will be monitored by myself within the department of general practice. There is a copy of the marking system in the back of the course book

Family Placement Goals 1. The effects of illness on individuals and families and how individuals and families affect illness 2. The ways in which people perceive themselves as being ill 3. The courses of action which people take, or do not take, in illness 4. The social and psychological processes influencing the illnesses from which people suffer 5. The effects that the attitudes and behaviours of doctors, and other health workers, have on individuals and their families

Family Placement Goals (contd) The nature of the doctor-patient relationship The feelings, perceptions and problems you experience when dealing with your placement family and how these have affected your attitudes and responses

Helpful hints for the essay The essay should demonstrate your understanding of the Goals of Family Placement Not all of the goals will apply equally to all of the families but all the essays should emphasise goal 7 It is useful to describe the make up of the family at the start of the essay Anonymise the families e.g. Mr and Mrs Smith etc Refer to the families within the group as necessary References are expected and should be properly quoted and listed

Layout of the essay Think about the layout : 1. Only write on one side of A4 2. Language use and readability will be marked 3. Pay attention to spacing and grammar 4. Please put your name, student number and tutor name on the front page of your essay

Chronic Illness/Disability Experience of chronic illness/disability Impact on self-identity? Stigma Impact on family? Impact on social relations?

Dr-Patient relationship What is your family’s relationship like with: – GP – Hospital – Hospice How might sociological theory help you to explain these relationships? Why might they vary between different settings?

Challenges to medicine Has your family used alternative/complimentary therapies? Why? How do they use them? – alongside western medicine or as an alternative How has this affected their relationship with their GP?

REMEMBER Anonymise your family Do not make value judgements Back up all your assertions with evidence Reference your work with published sources
