Social Trends & Demographics

Demographic Groups Generation X, Y & Z – Echo Boom – Boomers: – Gen X: – Baby Bust: – Gen Y (aka Echo): – Gen Z: (est.) What do you know about the generations listed above? Why would we care to know about demographic eras and generations?

Demography Study of human populations Age has a great deal to do with our interests, habits, our tastes & spending. – Demography is the key to having a strong marketing campaign Why might Demographers be useful for a nation? Make social and economic recommendations of age groups. Also useful to Anthropologist and Sociologist. Governments use demographic projections to help shape policies, such as immigration policies. Education system is able to project the needs of the students (rise in immigration = need for ESL programs...depending on where this immigration stems from)

Generation X Children grew up surrounded by materialism What’s materialism? Rejected society as being meaningless and boring. Refused to conform to societies norms & values Distrust any large institution Overcrowded world = no choice to look out for #1 First day of Kindergarten = not enough seats Demographic of high unemployment, low level work compared to education.

Generation Y How do you classify your generation?

Changing Populations Natural increase: more births than deaths in a period of time (approx 5 year). Natural decrease: more deaths than births in a period of time. Immigration - Emigration = net migration

Baby Boomers.... Cause & Effects to this major demographic.
