Your group is going to help teach young children in a primary school for three hours on a Saturday morning. You are planning what to do. Set 1.1 (2002)

This coming Saturday we are going to teach young children in a primary school. Now let’s plan our work. First of all, do you have any ideas on the things we can do with them? Start the discussion Asking for ideas

All children love playing. I think we can play games with them. You’re right. But what games can we play? Giving an idea with a reason Agreeing and asking a follow up question

For example, word games or guessing games. They’re educational. We can make sure that students learn something. I like guessing games. They’re great fun. We can hold a competition and give prizes to the winners. I’m sure the children will like it. Good idea! Giving an idea with a reason Showing support and giving additional ideas.

Besides playing games, I think we can teach them an English song. This can arouse their interest in learning English. That’s also a good idea. We need a variety of activities. Otherwise, the children will get bored easily. Giving a new idea with a reason Agreeing with supporting information

But I have a question. Anyone of you can teach them singing? I am not a good singer and I don’t know how to play any musical instrument. I can’t help with this part of the work. Don’t worry! We can play a CD and sing after it. All we need to do is to teach them the lyrics. Raise a problem Giving a solution to the problem

Noise is another problem. We may disturb other classes. That’s likely. Let’s see if we can use their Music Room. Then we can solve the problem. Raise another problem Suggest a solution

Shall we go back to what we can do with with the children? I think we need one more activity because we have three hours that day. Let’s do something quiet, say story-telling. I got several interesting stories. They can give the children a moral lesson. Lead the discussion Giving an idea with additional information

That sounds great! OK. Let’s sum up what we have decided so far. We will do three things with the children in the three hours. First of all, we will play word games and guessing games with them. Then, we will teach them to sing a song. Lastly, we will tell them a story. Does anyone have anything to add? Agreeing Summarizing ideas

NO. Then let’s move on to discuss the ways to make the children like us. I think giving away prizes is one of the ways. What do you think? Moving on to a new point Giving an idea Asking for opinion

Good idea! No one will hate Santa Claus. What’s more, we should avoid using punishment. Instead, we have to praise them and give them encouragement as often as possible. Agreeing Giving a new idea with details

You’re right. No one likes being punished. Punishment will only discourage learning. I can’t agree with you anymore on this point. Agreeing with supporting information Showing total agreement

Summing up points Finish the discussion with your group members.
