Yuan Longping Professor Yuan Longping, born in 1930, graduated form Southwest Agricultural College in China in 1953, and then was assigned to teach crop genetics and breeding at an agricultural school in Hunan Province. He began his research in hybrid rice development in 1964 and was transferred to the Hunan Academy of Agricultural Sciences in In 1973 he achieved a major scientific breakthrough as he successfully developed the gentic material essential for breeding high- yielding hybrid rice varieties. His distinguished life’s work has caused many to call him the “Father of hybrid Rice”.

Stephen hawking Stephen hawking, born in 1942, is a British scientist and has greatly influenced people’s ideas on the origins of the universe. A Brief History of Time by Hawking was published in 1988 and has sold millions of copies. Hawking suffers from a serious disease which limits his ability to move and speak, so he communicates by means of a specially created computer which “speaks” for him.
