Physical Education in Glasgow Standard Grade Presentations What is a Creativity? In sporting situations creativity is more commonly associated with individual activities that are indirectly competitive e.g. Dance and Gymnastics. However it can be found in any sporting circumstance including football, basketball, netball and badminton. Creativity is about the unusual, the unexpected and the unique. In indirectly competitive activities you use your imagination and flair to ensure that space is used effectively. E.G. Covering all floor space in Gymnastics. In Directly competitive activities performers use imagination and flair to create attacking advantages and outwit the opposition who are trying to mark you.

Physical Education in Glasgow Standard Grade Presentations Creativity in Individual Activities Within Dance and Gymnastics performers often show creativity by expressing ideas in new and original ways. Their performances are imaginative and unique and combine many different movements together in a sequence. The performances are also often accompanied by music. In Badminton and Tennis creativity is also shown in performances. Performers are trying to outwit and outmanoeuvre the opposition. The performer does this by creating space to play a winning shot, and by disguising the type of shot they are to play.

Physical Education in Glasgow Standard Grade Presentations Creativity in Team Activities In football and basketball creativity is often shown in different set pieces and tactics used by teams. However creativity is also evident within the selection of different skills and techniques by individuals. Players try to outwit and outmanoeuvre the opposition by creating space, width and depth. E.g. The Cruyff turn Creativity is shown in different ways within Batting & Fielding and Target activities. For example in cricket a normally right handed batter could change to left hand if they find a space in the fielders defence. In lawn bowls performers can play short blocker bowls denying a clear space for the opposition to the target.

Physical Education in Glasgow Standard Grade Presentations Principles of Play In team activities creativity helps to exploit and use different principles of play. This includes WIDTH, DEPTH and DELAY. When attacking width allows a team to pull the oppositions defence wide creating space and as a result more scoring opportunities. If a team has depth they will have more passing opportunities, forward and backward, right and left, square ball and through balls. This will also lead to more scoring opportunities created and also get a teams defence out of danger. By delaying an attack performers wait for the right opportunities to score, while in defence by delaying the opposition you slow their attack down. As a result you can get more players between the ball and the eventual target minimising scoring opportunities. In cycling by using slip streaming performers delay their sprint to the front until they feel they are in the right position to win.
