I NVASIVE SPECIES By Ramon Meza Room 103

N AME OF SPECIES Lymantria dispar Linnaeus or Gypsy Moth.

W HERE IS IT FROM ? W HERE, WHEN, AND WHY WAS IT INTRODUCED ? W HERE CAN IT BE FOUND TODAY ? The gypsy moth were introduced from Europe. It was introduced to the U.S. The gypsy moth was introduced in the year of This moth was introduced because of its silk. The gypsy moth can be found in northeastern America and Eurasia.

H OW CAN THIS EFFECT ME ? People interact with gypsy moths because gypsy moths effect trees. Gypsy moths effect trees because of the insect larvae, or caterpillars, which come out from there from their eggs. Gypsy moths carry an infection named (NPV) or nuclear polyhedrosis virus. Although this cannot harm us humans.

E FFECTS ON THE ECOSYSTEM : These insects are pests. They effect our ecosystem by defoliating our trees. 0ver the years since the introduction of gypsy moths our trees have been decaying. Although gypsy moths do not effect any other organisms.

R EASONS FOR SUCCESS : I could not find any reasons why it has been successful.

I SSUES FOR THE FUTURE There Is attempts to control the growth of gypsy moths. They have introduced mice to help control the population of the gypsy moth, because the mice preys on the moth. There are a few ways to control the population of the gypsy moth, one of its controls is pesticides. A tradeoff of the mice control can be that it may become over populated or it also can become invasive. The introduction of the mouse may decrease the population of the gypsy moth. Pesticides may effect the trees because of its strong chemicals making the trees worsen. Although it can kill the moth.
