MAPPING!

LOCATING POSITIONS ON EARTH COORDINATE SYSTEM: -A system of lines, that you can use to locate any position on Earth. - assigns every position on earth a pair of coordinates (2 numbers) called latitude and longitude

- Latitude: DISTANCE IN DEGREES NORTH AND SOUTH OF THE EQUATOR. -LINES OF LATITUDE RUN PARALLEL TO THE EQUATOR latitude

-Longitude: Degrees east or west of the prime meridian. -Lines of Longitude run parallel to the Prime Meridian -Prime Meridian: Imaginary line running through Greenwich England, from the north pole to the south pole

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT LATITUDE AND LONGITUDE! -Work in units of seconds and minutes -Just like there are 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour, the same goes for latitude and longitude. For Example: if you see 40o30’20”W, this = 40 Degrees, 30 Minutes and 20 Seconds West

-Altitude: The altitude of a heavenly body is its angular height above the horizon of an observer. Fig 1-6 in review book. -Your latitude= angle of Polaris (North Star) ASTROLABE
