Mr.Sassine Duration: Eight weeks starting Changing Australian Communities at the end of the term Investigating Australia’s physical environments

So what do we already know... So what do you already know about Australia's size and shape? Is Australia a continent? Is it one of the smaller or larger continents? What about longitude and latitude? Southern or northern hemispher

So what do you know about Australia’s size and shape? Australia is the smallest of the seven continents in the world. If you travelled in a straight line from Australia’s east coast to the west cost of Australia, you would cover a distance of almost 4000km. Australia covers an area of about 7682 million square kilometres. The population of Australia grew to over 22 million people in 2007

Three time zones in one country? Travelling from the east coast of Australia to the west coast of Australia would mean you would travel across three time zones.

Australia is the smallest continent! Australia is one of seven continents on earth

Lets revise! Australia is one of the seven continents in the world T OR F Travelling in a straight line from Australia’s east coast to the west coast of Australia would cover a distance of almost 6000 km T OR F. (False, the distance is 4000km) On the west coast the sun rises two hours later than it does on the east T OR F

A journey from Western Australia to Sydney would result in your crossing five time zones T OR F (False would only result in crossing three time zones) Asia is the largest continent in the world followed by Africa T OR F

Latitude and Longitude in Australia Australia is located in the southern hemisphere.

Longitude and latitude allow us to locate any places on earth. For example Australia has a latitude and longitude of 30°S (LAT always first) and 130°E (LONG) after latitude always. (Approximate)

Latitude and Longitude To locate places geographers use a grid made up of lines of latitude and longitude. Lat is fat: Imaginary lines running across the world are called parallels of latitude. They measure how far north or south of the equator(0 degrees latitude something) is located. Places south of the equator are shown with a “S” and places north of the equator are shown with a “N”.

Lines of Latitude

Longitude Imaginary lines running from the South pole to the north pole are called meridians of longitude. One of these lines has been chosen as the Prime Meridian (0° longitude). It runs through Greenwich in England. All other lines of longitude are given a number between 0° and 180°. They measure how far east or west of the Prime Meridian a place is located. Places east of this line are marked with an “E” and places west of this line are marked with a “W”.

Meridians of Longitude

Prime Meridian, runs through Greenwich in England. All other lines of longitude are given a number between 0° and 180°. The line measures how far east or west a place is located from the prime of Meridian. So longitude is given after Latitude
