Important People & Events John F. Kennedy—he was born on May 29th, 1917. Was elected to be 35th President of the United States in 1960. He was the youngest president ever elected at age forty-three. Started Group called the Peace Corps—a group that tries to keep peace all over the world. Assassinated on November 22, 1963

The Civil Rights Movement People across America decided to get together and stop discrimination against African Americans. Before the Civil Rights Movement, African Americans and white people were segregated or separated into different groups. Different races attended difference schools. One influential person involved in the Civil Rights Movement was Rosa Parks. One day, Rosa Parks was on the bus going home from work when she refused to give up her seat to a white man. She was arrested and thrown in jail.

Martin Luther King Jr. Graduated High School at the age of 15 and went on to college and received his Doctorate degree. After college, he became a pastor in Montgomery, Alabama. He wanted people to “peacefully protest” against discrimination and be able to have conversations about the topic. Famous Speech: “I Have a Dream.”—He discussed the thought of America treating all people equally and no one discriminating against any race.

Lesson 10 Grammar Continued A common noun names any person, place, thing, or idea. It can also name a concept. A common noun will begin with a lower case letter unless it’s at the start of a sentence. What are the common nouns in this sentence? That tiny puppy ate all of his food. A proper noun names a particular person, place or thing. Each important word in a proper noun begins with an uppercase letter.
