What is a healthy diet? Emphasizes fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and fat-free or low-fat dairy products. Includes lean meats, poultry, fish, beans, eggs, and nuts. Is low in saturated fats, trans fats, cholesterol, salt, and added sugars.

Vegetarian Diets Choose this lifestyle for many reasons: – Religious beliefs – Concern for environment – Economics – Health Considerations – Animal Welfare Factors – Ethical considerations for world hunger

Vegetarians Someone who consumes no meat, fish, or poultry products. There are several types: – Vegan: Most strict. Do not eat/wear anything that comes from animals. – Lacto-vegetarian: Eat dairy products plus vegan options. – Ovo-vegetarian: Consume eggs plus vegan options. – Lacto-ovo-vegetarian: Consumes eggs + dairy + vegan options

My Pyramid Focuses on the following: – Grains – Vegetables – Fruit – Milk and Dairy Products – Meat and Beans

6 Key Themes Proportionality: Variety Physical Activity Moderation Gradual Improvement Personalization

Nutrition Labels Useful tool in selecting food for a healthy diet. Helpful to: – Avoid food allergens – Plan special diets – Limit fat, sodium, cholesterol, or calories – Identify food items that are good sources of vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients such as fiber.

The Problem of Obesity Obese: – A person who is overweight or has a weight that is greater than what is generally considered healthy. BMI: – Weight in pounds X 703/height in inches – Below 18.5=Underweight – =Normal – =Overweight – 30 and above=Obese

Obesity Stats 16% of children aged 9-16 are obese. An estimated 65% of U.S. adults aged 20 years and older are either overweight or obese. An estimated 30% of U.S. adults aged 20 years or older (60 million people) are obese. What could be causing these figures?
