F.O.A. (Bellwork) The very same day our windmill was delivered, my dad had it set up and ready to go in the backyard. Disappointingly, we did not have any wind for nearly a week. When the wind did start blowing, I could hear its blades spinning round and round. The winds were only 15–25 mph, but it was enough to supply power to both the hen house and woodshed. Even though it’s a little noisy, lighting up the hen house with wind power is worth it! Which statement is supported by BOTH the above paragraph and the information in the passage? A. Windmills are easy to set up and install. B. Windmills can be set up at home for personal use. C. New windmills are quieter than older ones. D. Wind farms need to be scattered over large areas.

READ THIS During the sixteenth century, England and Spain were the most powerful countries in the world. Both countries wanted to best one another, and they engaged in fierce competition for control of trade routes, sea power, and exploration. Queen Elizabeth I ruled over the English empire. Among her loyal subjects was Sir Francis Drake, an adventurer and seaman. A favorite of Queen Elizabeth, Drake constantly bothered the Spanish ships he encountered on his travels and even went so far as to rob and burn them! Phillip II of Spain had enough of the English empire and its pirate-like seamen, and in 1588 he decided to invade. Phillip wanted to overthrow Queen Elizabeth so he could rule over England as well as Spain. Phillip hatched a plot, and went about building the biggest and strongest fleet of warships ever assembled, now known as the Spanish Armada. Phillip was convinced that his 125 ships were unbeatable and that he would easily conquer England. He was so convinced of his power that he referred to his fleet of warships as the Invincible Armada. When the Spanish warships entered English territory, the English boats, led by Drake, quickly attacked. The Spanish ships were so large, they had trouble keeping up with the small English boats. Drake’s fleet was more maneuverable and could easily dodge the Spanish cannonballs. After the battle, a huge storm came in and the English boats darted back to shore to safety, but the large Spanish warships could not. As a result, many of the Spanish ships were ruined beyond repair and by the time the invasion was over, only half of the Invincible Armada was left to retreat in defeat back to Spain.

Answers The last two paragraphs are most different in that A. the first focuses on the Armada, and the second focuses on Phillip II’s desire to take control of England. B. the first focuses on the size of the Armada, and the second focuses on the size of Drake’s fleet. C. the first focuses on importance of Phillip II, and the second focuses on the role of Drake. D. the first focuses on creating the Armada, and the second focuses on the famous naval battle.
