6. COMMUNICATION METHODS Communicate with the datalogger via Stylitis Explorer, its operating software, in various ways. The datalogger can be used: On its own, for local and remote (GSM/GPRS) operation: 1.Locally 2.Via GPRS, using a cheap Dynamic IP SIM Card (via Diameson Server) 3.Via GPRS, using a static IP SIM Card 4.Via a GSM data call. With other types of modems (which do not require a SIM card), connected to its serial port: 1.Via Satellite 2.Via RF modems 3.Measuring network via RF modems 4.Remote measuring network via RF modems With a serial-to-Ethernet adaptor, connected to its serial port: 1.Via Ethernet The communication methods are presented more analytically in the next chapters.

7. LOCAL COMMUNICATION 1. Locally RS-232 Connect via a NULL MODEM serial cable your computer COM port to the logger’s DTE port (MASTER). NOTE: When you communicate locally with Stylitis-50, its internal modem turns off. Stylitis-50

8. GPRS COMMUNICATION VIA DYNAMIC IP SIM 2. Via GPRS, using a cheap Dynamic IP SIM Card (via Diameson Server) Virtual COM Use Stylitis-50’s built-in Sym-o-net modem set to GPRS client mode. Neither ADSL (static IP) connection is required for the logger nor expensive static IP SIM cards. A cheap dynamic IP GPRS SIM card is required. Low operation cost: The datalogger is permanently online, but only data exchange is charged. Dataloggers and Computers are connected as clients to Diameson Gateway, Symmetron’s server software. Symmetron’s Diameson is available for connections, but you can use your own Diameson, to manage your own dataloggers. Internet Diameson Gateway Stylitis-50

9. GPRS COMMUNICATION VIA STATIC IP SIM 3. Via GPRS, using a static IP SIM Card Virtual COM Use Stylitis-50’s built-in Sym-o-net modem set to GPRS server mode. A GPRS static IP SIM card is required. Again, only data exchange is charged. The datalogger acts like a server, and the computer connecting to it acts as its client. Internet Stylitis-50

10. GSM COMMUNICATION 4. Via a GSM data call RS-232 Use Stylitis-50’s built-in Sym-o-net modem set to GSM data mode. Connect a GSM modem to a computer COM port. Call the logger’s modem, provided that both modems’ SIM cards support GSM data calls. GSM modem Stylitis-50

11. SATELLITE COMMUNICATION 5. Via Satellite RS-232 RS-232 Two satellite iridium modems are required, one connected to the computer and one to the datalogger’s DTE port (MASTER). Communication is achieved via satellite. Iridium modem Stylitis-50 Iridium modem

12. RF COMMUNICATION 6. Via RF modems RS-232 RS-232 Connect one RF Modem to Stylitis-50’s MASTER port and one to the computer’s COM port. Achieve remote connections without a SIM card, for a limited distance (usually a few kilometers) between modems. Radio Modem Stylitis-50

12. COMMUNICATION VIA RF NETWORK 7. Measuring network via RF modems RS-232 Capability of communication with multiple dataloggers (one at a time), by using an RF modem for the computer (as a Master) and one for each datalogger (as Slaves). Again the distance between the Master modem and each Slave modem is limited (usually a few kilometers). Each datalogger modem is set to have a unique address. Communicate with one at a time. Radio Modem Stylitis-50

8. Remote measuring network via RF modems Sym-o-net Internet RS-232 RS COMMUNICATION VIA REMOTE RF NETWORK Stylitis-50 Radio Modems Diameson Gateway Same method as before, with the difference that the modem network can be remote, regarding the computer. The Master modem can be accessed via the GPRS network via Symmetron’s Sym-o-net modem (same with Stylitis-50’s built-in modem). Sym-o-net (like Stylitis-50) can also connect as a client to Diameson Gateway, via a dynamic IP SIM card. Again the distance between the Master modem and each Slave modem is limited (usually a few kilometers). Virtual COM RS-232

17. ETHERNET COMMUNICATION 9. Via Ethernet (local network or the internet) RS-232 Connect a Serial-to-Ethernet adaptor to the datalogger’s MASTER port. Connect the Ethernet port to a LAN or to the internet. An ADSL connection (a static IP) for the logger is required only to connect the logger to the internet. LAN/ internet ADSL Router Stylitis-50 Serial-to- Ethernet

Stylitis Explorer is Stylitis-50’s free operating software. Start up with Stylitis Explorer, by creating Site folders and Connections. -Create one unique site folder for each datalogger. -In each site folder, multiple (different types of) connections can be created for the logger. The different connection types correspond to the communication methods, discussed before. -The connections created are saved as windows files, which are recognized by Stylitis Explorer in a folder interface, along with the compressed and decompressed data files (see Chapter 20), and setup files, ie logger settings (see next Chapter) saved in a file. -There is also a user friendly way to manage and view a list of all the created sites and go to a specific site with a double-click. View statistics, such as last connection and download (manual and automatic). Refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter 22. After achieving a connection, you can communicate with the logger. Besides changing logger and Sym-o-net modem settings and download data, you can view some features, and specifically: -View the logger’s status: Instant parameters, such as the date and time, the battery voltage, the current data file being recorded, the recording time remaining in the buffer and in the card, etc. -View an Online plot of the selected channels’ values. All samples are plotted (every second). Appropriate units appear on the plot. Refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter 22. -Via the virtual keyboard, navigate in the logger’s menus to view the instant channel values and the status parameters one by one. 18. STYLITIS EXPLORER: STARTING UP

19. STYLITIS EXPLORER: SETUP Connect to the datalogger, via Stylitis Explorer, via one of the connections you created and modify its setup, ie settings such as the recording interval (selectable from 1 min to 1 hour) and the logger’s site name. However, the main settings to be adjusted are the channel settings. CHANNEL SETTINGS The settings of all channels can be changed in two ways: -Manually. Change settings manually. Manual setup can be done either via a virtual keyboard, by navigating in the logger’s menus or via the user friendly Easy Setup (see Chapter 22 for screen shot): -Select mode. For counter channels select Counter, Frequency or Events. For analog ones, select Analog, PT-100 or Vane. -Select type. For counter channels, select TTL, REED, SIN or #40 (SIN with filter). For Analog channels A3~A6, enable/ disable the gain and for A7, A8 select between Voltage and Current (4~20mA) Input. -Type the Slope and Offset parameters. -Via Stylitis Explorer’s Sensor Library. Via Easy Setup again, instead of changing the settings manually, you can select a specific measurement and then a specific sensor, related to this measurement. Optionally, also change the measuring units. All settings are updated automatically. SYM-O-NET SETTINGS Sym-o-net is Stylitis-50’s built-in modem. Adjust its settings via Sym-o-net Programmer, an add-on software to Stylitis Explorer. The settings to be adjusted are: -Selection of the modem’s operation, defining the type of the remote connection, as discussed in previous chapters: GSM data mode, GPRS client mode (via Diameson server) or GPRS server mode. -SMS cellphone number (optionally). An alarm SMS is sent if the power supply is found below 11V. -GPRS settings, if GPRS operation is selected. SIM card provider settings: APN, User Name, Password. Diameson settings: IP address and Device Listening port. - settings. Enable or disable encrypted (according to the password) data s at least once a day. Define the SMTP mail server, sender, recipient and if the SIM card provider requires authentication, type the account’s User Name and Password. -Peripheral Schedule. Define between what hours of the day the datalogger and the auxiliary serial device will be available for remote communication (and the modem will be turned on).

After writing the desired setup in the datalogger, enable data acquisition to start recording. Data is recorded in compressed form, in two ways: -In the logger’s internal 512KB memory (buffer). Only the current file is stored in the buffer, ie if you set Acquisition=OFF, the buffer is cleared and data are lost. -In a removable Compact Flash card (up to 2GB). The data storage is practically unlimited. Multiple data files can be stored in the card. A new file begins when downloading the current file or disabling and re-enabling the acquisition. When downloaded, a compressed file is decompressed into a data file, which can be viewed via a text editor. Compressed and decompressed data files are stored in the logger’s site folder, as mentioned in Chapter 18. Data download can be achieved either manually or automatically via AutoConnect software (see Chapter 24). MANUAL DOWNLOAD a.From the buffer. Download the current file. In the end, you will be asked if you wish to clear the buffer and begin a new file or not (the same file will continue to grow). b.From the Compact Flash. There are 3 download options when you are using a Compact Flash: -Download the most recent file. If Acquisition is ON, this is the current file. In this case, the current file is firstly closed (the next file begins) and then downloaded. -Download the card’s directory. This way all the card’s files (the last 256 ones) appear with their number, start date and size. The directory is also saved in a text file in the site folder. -Download a previous file, by typing their number. Again, the last 256 files are available. To download all previous files, retrieve the card and read it via a card reader. 20. STYLITIS EXPLORER: ACQUISITION AND DOWNLOAD

After downloading the data files in the site folder, you can manage them offline. Stylitis Explorer offers some useful tools for offline management and presentation: Plot. View the selected channels’ plot, in up to 3 graph groups. View values at a specific moment with the channel units. Refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter 23. Data File Processing. Check the integrity of a folder’s files, ie check for missing or duplicate records or if the interval is the same for all files. Statistics. Statistics of the file’s data can appear per hour, per day, per month and per year. Statistics include be the average values of the data (within the hour, day, month or year), the max, min or sdv values, or sum of all values. They are presented via a bar graph or a dot plot. Refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter 23. Data Availability. View the percentage of the available data of a site folder within the years, in which there are data. For a specific year, view the corresponding percentage within its months. Refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter 23. Convert data file parameters. Apply new Slope and Offset values in a downloaded file in retrospect and create a new file. Export to WindRose/Excel/.CSV/.TAB file. Export a file’s data to an Excel, a comma delimited or a tab delimited file. Especially for wind data (speed and direction channels), you can export them to WindRose, the wind analysis software, add-in to the Microsoft Excel, which is manufactured by CRES and distributed by Symmetron. For WindRose, refer to the corresponding screen shot in Chapter STYLITIS EXPLORER: OFFLINE DATA MANAGEMENT

24. AUTOCONNECT SOFTWARE As stated before, data files can be downloaded manually, via Stylitis Explorer, via any connection. However, data download, along with other actions as well, can be preformed automatically, in a regular basis, via the additional free software AutoConnect. The datalogger can perform a different action each weekday: -Download Data: The current data file, either from the buffer or from the Compact Flash. There is an option to clear the buffer in the end or not. -Download Status: Instant parameters, such as the current file, the recording time remaining, etc. -Download Display. Get the instant channel values. -Update Captum. Captum is a free service to present real-time and historical data of Symmetron data loggers on the World Wide Web. Captum Plot The selected action of a weekday can be performed once a day at a specific selected time, or infinite connections can be made that weekday every as many minutes as you wish. Besides editing the auto connections (like in Stylitis Explorer) via AutoConnect’s interface, you can: -View a list of all your automatic connections and execute one or more manually. -Check each connection’s latest status, ie if it succeeded, or failed and why. -View the date and time of last connection and last successful download for each one.

25. MAIN APPLICATIONS AND CONCLUSION Stylitis-50 could be used in: Wind energy assessment. Solar plant monitoring. Weather stations. Electrical Measurements. Tank level monitoring …and many more Summing up, its main advantages are: Specialized in wind measurements. Adequate channel number covering most needs (can measure speed/ direction in 9 heights). Variety of sensor types supported, along with suitable voltage and current excitation outputs. Unique sensor supervisor technology. Ability to isolate faulty sensors, if power consumption is high.
