What is Intelligence? (from Chapter 9) 1905: Standford Binet Tests: Combo of _________ and ________ Major theorists: Robert Sternberg: “Triarchic Model” Daniel Goleman: Emotional Intelligence Howard Gardner: Theory of __________

Sternberg’s Triarchic Theory Note: This theory assumes all factors work together to form intelligence.

Goleman’s Emotional Intelligence 5 factors: Self Awareness Mood management Self motivation Impulse Control People Skills Note: This theory answers the question: “Why do some smart people not succeed in life?

Sample Questions on a Emotional Intelligence Test…. 1. I panic when I have to face someone who is angry 2. When I have a major personal problem, I cannot think about anything else. 3. No matter how much I accomplish, I feel like I should be doing more. 4. I feel like I worry about things that other people don't even think about. 5. When I mess up, I say self-deprecating things, such as "I am such a loser," "Stupid, stupid, stupid," or "I can't do anything right." 6. I get distressed without really knowing who or what exactly is bothering me. 7. Even when I do my best, I feel guilty about the things that were not done perfectly. 8. I feel uneasy in situations where I am expected to display affection.

Gardner’s Multiple Intelligences Note: This theory is used in school teaching methods

Discussion Essential Questions Why might it be good to think about “intelligence” in these different ways? Are you overly focused on “grades” as a measure of your intelligence? Can this be a problem in the “real world”? Do you think schools place “too much” or “not enough” emphasis on “multiple” or “emotional” intelligences?
