 It is a transparent watch glass like membraneous tissue which forms the front 1/6 of the eye ball  It lacks blood vessels (avascular) and thus is transparent ie., allows light rays to pass through unhindered for good vision  So, it can be transplanted without fear of rejection What is Cornea?

Diseases of Cornea  Corneal ulcers  Pterygium  Corneal opacity  Injuries  Conjunctivitis  Dystrophies  Corneal shape disorders – keratoconus, cornea planna

It is an infective or sterile breach in the corneal surface Cause:   Injury   Infection by microorganisms (eg. Bacteria, fungi, viruses)   Exposure to dust and even contact lenses see to be common sources of infection Corneal Ulcers

 Pain  Redness  Defective vision  Discomfort to the patients Symptoms

 Early stage of the corneal ulcer can be easily cured by medications  But at the severe stage of the corneal ulcer some corneal transplantation surgery need for the patient  The treatment is for healing only not for vision improvement  After healing the scar of the corneal ulcer it makes white opacity of the cornea Cont…Treatment

 So the cornea losses it transparency due the loss of vision  PKP – Penetrating Kerato Plasty surgery is done for vision improvement under gradual visual progression

 Should explain the need for proper compliance with medications and appropriate review as advised by the doctor  Importance of the correct follow up  Explain do’s and don’t Role of the counsellor

Do’s:  Must wear the protective glass  Must use the medicines properly  Keep the medicines and medicine box in clean area  Wash the hands before applying drops  Clean the eye daily  Must avoid dirty place

Don’t:  Rub the eyes  Take head bath  Drive two wheelers

Conclusion: Creating awareness of corneal ulcer
