Who Cares About Downloads? Part of regular reporting for Research Office (PVC-RSQ) deans and researchers February 2014 we shared internal IRStats with over 750 researchers with items deposited since January 2013 Almost immediate feedback…

Which Download Statistics? Started off with Google Analytics – Issues with missing downloads – Hidden algorithms IRStats / IRStats2 – Much higher numbers than GA – Improved accuracy? – Easily integrated IRUS-UK – Consistent open processing – Easier benchmarking 2002 ?

Why IRUS-UK? Still use GA & IRStats for some functions e.g. site visits IRUS-UK gives us – Independent analysis of full download record – COUNTER compliance – no local effort – Benchmarking with 80+ other UK IRs – Consistent processing across wide base – Many useful reports e.g. duplicate DOIs

What Issues Do We See?

Some discrepancies between IRUS and local IRStats – IRUS-UK Robots list more up to date – Extra Robots processing at IRUS-UK – Different ‘double-click’ intervals – IRUS-UK has better malicious IP filtering »Broader sampling base allows better identification of bot-farms »Honeypot spider recognition mechanisms

How To Reuse IRUS-UK Stats? Web Interface – Many useful reports for repository – Manual effort to compile and distribute API (v1) – Quick response data for individual items – JSON format (easy for computer reuse) – Request by various identifiers e.g. DOI / OAI – Render the data using Google Charts

How To Reuse IRUS-UK Stats?

Moment of Inspiration, No. 1 Testing retrieval of stats by OAI identifier (oai:open.ac.uk.OAI2:12345) Checked format of response to request by DOI ( – Numbers don’t match ? DOI stats were from a different repository – We could show these as well as our own! – No control over which DOI stats returned – Multiple requests are slow and don’t scale well Hmmm….

Moment of Inspiration, No. 1

Moment of Inspiration, No. 1a Cache the data locally! – Reduce the load on IRUS-UK servers – Quicker response – Happy IRUS-UK, Happy Users, Happy Us! How to update the cache? – Data fairly stable – changes monthly – Inline updating too slow Either – Flag updates in event queue at request time – Arrange bulk updates from IRUS-UK

Scheduled updates - Long delay - - Short - Store update request No update required update happens ‘offline’

Moment of Inspiration, No local items, local DOIs … Use DOI to look up stats for items we don’t have! – Indicate how much interest is in the paper – Encourage local deposit Could we use it to find the hosting repository? – Refer users to remote location of item – ‘Harvest’ the paper for local storage?

What does the future hold? Currently testing caching and graph formats Repository identifiers on DOI queries Batch, timed or ‘on-demand’ updates? SUSHI-Lite protocol Include publisher article level statistics?

Summary Sharing download statistics drives deposit Centralised and standardised better – Less effort – level playing field Unintended consequences / opportunities Statistics need seasoning
