Photosynthesis: a series of chemical reactions that convert light energy, water, and carbon dioxide into the food-energy molecule glucose and give off.
Photosynthesis Leaves are green because they contain small bodies in the cells called chloroplasts. The chloroplasts contain a green pigment called chlorophyll.

Plant Characteristics
Plants People and animals need oxygen to live. Green plants make the oxygen in the air we breathe. How do plants make oxygen? Plants take in carbon dioxide.
carbon dioxide + water glucose + oxygen
Photosynthesis & Respiration. What is Photosynthesis? The process of photosynthesis is a chemical reaction. It is the most important chemical reaction.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS “To make something with light”

Required elements Chlorophyll Carbon dioxide from air Solar energy water

PartFunctionProperty ChlorophyllTraps sunlightGreen pigment Leaves/stomataLets in CO2Holes in bottom of leaf Xylem“up” elevators, carry water and minerals up the plant hollow Phloem“down elevators” carries food down to rest of plant hollow SugarProvides energy for growth, changed into fats and proteins. Contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. Guard cellsControl amount of water vapor that passes out of leaves Door that closes stomata

Steps for photosynthesis 1.Chlorophyll traps sunlight to use as energy. 2.Carbon dioxide enters through the stomata. 3.Water brought from the roots through the xylem reacts with CO2. 4.Reaction forms a simple sugar. 5.Sugar is stored as starch, used for energy and converted to fats and proteins.

Steps continued 6. The products travel to the rest of the plant through the phloem to help it grow and stay healthy. 7.Oxygen is produced in the reaction and water vapor. 8.Stomata releases the oxygen and water.
