Speed, Velocity and Acceleration What is speed? How is velocity different than speed? What is acceleration? Today’s Goal: Be able to use the proper equations to calculate the speed and acceleration of an object.

Speed/Velocity Speed is a measurement of how of far an object travels in a given amount of time. ◦ Ex: mph, m/s, ft/s, km/h If a direction is included in a speed measurement, then it is considered a velocity. ◦ Ex: 100 mph north, 20 m/s south

Average Velocity Equation Speed and velocity are basically the same thing, only velocity has a direction to it. The equation to find the average velocity or speed of an object is: ◦ V = d/t ◦ V = velocity or speed ◦ d = distance traveled ◦ t= the time it took to travel that distance

Practice v = d/t 1) A car travels 100 miles in an hour. What is the average speed of that car? 2) A car travels 100 miles in 2 hours. What is the average speed of that car? ALWAYS USE THE SAME UNITS THAT ARE GIVEN TO YOU!

Practice: v = d/t 3) You walk a mile in 0.5 hours. What is your average speed? 4) You bike for 10 miles and it takes you 2 hours. What was your average speed? ALWAYS USE THE SAME UNITS THAT ARE GIVEN TO YOU!

Acceleration Acceleration is a measure of how quickly an object is speeding up or slowing down. If an object is speeding up then the acceleration is positive. If an object is slowing down then the acceleration is negative.

Calculating Acceleration Acceleration is found by using the equation: a = acceleration Vf = the final velocity of the object Vi = the initial or starting velocity t = the amount of time that went by

Calculating Acceleration 1) A car goes from 0 to 60 mph in 10 seconds. What is the acceleration of that car? 2) It takes a car 5 seconds to stop when traveling at 20 mph. What is the acceleration of that car? DON’T FORGET UNITS!

Calculating Acceleration 3) A rocket is traveling at 2,000 m/s after 10 seconds and then traveling 3,000 m/s after 20 seconds. What was the acceleration of the rock between 10 and 20 seconds after taking off? DON’T FORGET UNITS!
