Capital- Port-au-Prince Language- French and Haitian Creole Haiti is on the western part of Hispaniola, the second largest island in the Greater Antilles. Haiti is the third largest country in the Caribbean behind Cuba and the Dominican Republic. It was the first independent nation of Latin America and the Caribbean and the first black- led republic in the world. On 12 January 2010, at 4:53 PM, Haiti was struck by a magnitude-7.0 earthquake, the country's most severe earthquake in over 200 years. The 2010 Haiti earthquake was reported to have left up to 316,000 people dead and 1.6 million homeless

What did you notice about the artwork of Haiti? Common themes? Colors? Subject? Layout? Have you ever seen artwork that looks like Haitian paintings? What was the subject in many of the pieces? Let’s look at the three examples we have in the room.

Using the imagery that we looked at today, you are going to brainstorm a list of everyday activities that you engage in and that are significant to your life. Choose a few and sketch ideas for a painting. How would you illustrate you doing the activity? Think about composition, background, inspiration from the Haiti art. Keep figures simple shapes, focus on color and space– foreground, middle ground, background. Use your technology to research and look up more images of Haitian art.
