Gesellschaft für SchwerIonenforschung - GSI ● Basic Physics Research – Heavy Elements (110: Darmstadtium, Ds.....) – Atomic Physics – Nuclear Matter (EOS, strangeness) – Hadron Physics (restauration of chiral symmetry....) – Future Projects (radioactive beams, cooled antiproton beams, compressed baryonic matter, plasma physics) ● Therapy Project – Cancer Therapy with C-beam Walter Schön, GSI

Operating GSI ● about 700 boxes with Windows, mostly Desktop, some slow control ● about 350 boxes with LINUX, Desktop, Simulation, Data Analysis, Development, DAQ ● about 40 boxes with AIX, Medical Therapy, Central Services, Desktop, Construction ● about 60 boxes with VMS Accelerator control & Development, Desktop, central service ● about 20 boxes with Lynx DAQ ● some boxes with solaris Chip-Design, medical Therapy ● some exotic stuff ( Mac, BSD,.....) Desktop Publishing, Development Walter Schön, GSI

● GSI – Theoretical Models ( LINUX -Cluster) – Simulation of experiments (LINUX-Cluster) – Data Analysis (Linux-Cluster) – Control of accelerators, experiments (VMS -> Linux ?) – Printing, DNS, WEB, MAIL... (AIX, LINUX, NT/Win2k) – Desktop (NT, LINUX, AIX, VMS, XP) – “special applications”: Solaris – Backup, Archive: TSM Walter Schön, GSI

The GSI powered by DEBIAN.... ● The interactive LINUX Farm: – about 200 Computers as Desktop systems (GSI wide login possible, whole GSI) – 8 Dual Xeon boxes 2HE rackmount in computing room – central administration – central system Walter Schön, GSI

● The GSI Batch Farm: – about 200 CPUs – 60 Dual Xeon (Hyperthreading activated), 2 HE rackmount, 2 GB ECC RAM – 45 Dual Pentium III, mini-tower, 1GB ECC RAM – organised by LSF, ver. 5.x – fully integrated in the LINUX Farm, no interactive sessions possible – access restricted to 1 batch jobs per CPU Walter Schön, GSI

Linux Farm file server /usr/local group server A system client a1 client an client a group server B system client b1 Walter Schön, GSI /tmp /var /home bootserver

Central File Server ● element of the LINUX farm ● location: central computing hall ● 10 x 4 HE 19 “ Dual CPU Pentium III rackmount ● GB ethernet ● 2 TB central home file system on scsi RAID level V ● 10 TB data file system on ide-scsi RAID level V ● exports via nfs ● central backup via TSM Distributed File Server ● element of the LINUX-Farm ● location: distributed ● about 70 midi Tower Pentium III,IV ● 100 MB ethernet ● about 700 GB distributed /home/user, /data/group ● export via nfs ● central backup via TSM

Near Future: ● HA-Solution for central File Server (status: beta test) ● migration from AIX -> LINUX ● more boxes for the LINUX batch-farm Walter Schön, GSI
