Pipeline Safety Trust Conference Oliver C. Moghissi, Ph.D. November 17, 2011

Who is NACE International? Corrosion Technical Society – >27,000 members Aligned by interest in corrosion prevention No industry or trade group affiliation All members of equal grade & status – Regulators, operators, researchers, vendors, consultants, etc. – Global presence across all industries Founded by 11 pipeline engineers in 1943 – The World’s Largest Corrosion Conference

MISSION Protect people, assets, and the environment from the effects of corrosion VISION To be the leader in the corrosion engineering and science communities and to be recognized around the world as the premier authority for corrosion control solutions

Session Topic Corrosion is the leading cause of transmission pipeline incidents – How do we fix that? What is NACE doing? 1.Technical standards 2.Corrosion management guidance 3.Corrosion science 4.Professional Development 5.Public awareness

1. Technical Consensus Standards Consensus standards give corrosion professionals peer-reviewed technical practice documents. – Technically sound (i.e., developed by those with the best information) – Balance prescription with engineering judgment and use of new technology – By and for corrosion professionals in all roles

2. Corrosion Management Guidance Corrosion management documents – By and for all stakeholders, including those outside of the technical community – Many corrosion decisions made by those without technical knowledge Recommendation of the corrosion professional ‘the loneliest job’ Incur expense so that nothing happens – Except reduced risk – Prioritize expense (e.g., filling the right gaps)

3. Forum for Corrosion Science Access to cutting edge research. This allows us to predict future threats. – Near-neutral SCC – Ethanol cracking – Diluted Bitumen

4. Professional Development Creating corrosion professionals (i.e., training) with recognized credentials (i.e., certification) The next generation; demographics New B.S. program in Corrosion Engineering

5. Public Awareness Cost of corrosion, including safety (i.e., risk) Prevention over inspect & repair/replace Corrosion risk communication Reach those outside of our technical community, including use of media Influence public policy to ensure technically sound, effective, and efficient corrosion management
