What may you infer? He put down $20 at the window. The woman behind the window gave him back $6.00. The person next to him gave him $7, but he gave it back to her. So, when they went inside, she bought him a large bag of buttered popcorn.

INFERENCE Inference = Fact + Knowledge/Experience Everyday situations in which you infer to make meaning of things: When to go to your next class. When you are asking or answering a question. When to ask for or give assistance. To infer is to read between the lines.

OBSERVATION is what you see: INFERENCE is what you figure out:

WarmUp Read these sentences, and write the missing words on your paper. 1. If you have trouble ___________, you might try counting sheep. 2. We like to eat, so our favorite thing is to go out to a __________. 3.Driving ___________ is both dangerous and against the law. Be ready to discuss how you know which words are missing. How would you figure out the meanings if you had just moved here from a foreign country/culture?

Jeremy has a test today in third period. He did not sleep well last night. Q. Is Jeremy supposed to take a test today? A. In the Text OR In Your Head Q. How well did Jeremy sleep last night? A. In the Text OR In Your Head Q. Is Jeremy nervous about taking the test? A. In the Text OR In Your Head Write a complete answer to the last question using complete sentences and text evidence.

Read the excerpt, and answer these questions on your paper, using text evidence to support your answer. Timmy knows he had a twin sister. “We just tell him that she’s in heaven, waiting,” says his mom. Q. How old is Timmy? Q. Is this family religious? Q. Where is Timmy’s father?

Possible Answers for this: Timmy knows he had a twin sister. “We just tell him that she’s in heaven, waiting,” says his mom. Q. How old is Timmy? I don’t know how old he is, but Timmy must be a young child. The way his mother explained death is how you would tell a child. Q. Is this family religious? This family is probably religious. The mom is talking about heaven which is a religious idea. Q. Where is Timmy’s father? I cannot know from the text where Timmy’s father is. But, I might be able to say that Timmy’s father is there because his mom says, “We.”

What do you see? What do you know about these things? Make an inference about what happened.

What do you see? It’s a pet store There are a cat, a bird, and a piranha. The piranha is in a bowl, and the cat is on the ground. The cat’s front legs are gone, and it has peg legs instead. So, what has happened? Why is this funny?

Which one means the same as : “The old law of ‘an eye for an eye’ leaves everybody blind.” —Martin Luther King, Jr. –A. Violence is a necessary evil. –B. Responding to violence with violence leads to destruction. –C. Old laws are the best laws. –D. There are better ways of responding to injustice than with violence.

What has happened? A woman at a restaurant begins to cry. The other diners begin to clap. The woman’s date places a ring on her hand.

What is going on? The students stand in line. The teacher tells them to be quiet. They exit the building and return to class after the bell rings.

Where are you? The crowd goes wild. Posters are lifted high in the air. Soon our new president will be elected.

Uh-oh! What is going on here? Did you pass? Your coach said you would need to if the team wanted to win. Maybe you should go to tutorials.

A hundred years from now, it will not matter what my bank account was, the sort of house I lived in, or the kind of car I drove. But the world may be a different place because I was important in the life of a child. Is this person altruistic? What do you need to do in order to answer this question? How would you infer meaning if you just moved here from a foreign country/culture?

Scenario You are in Mrs. Austin’s classroom. Suddenly you hear a rumble outside, above the roof. Then you hear what sounds like a giant showerhead pouring water on the roof. Just before that, you heard what sounded like a huge whip cracking. What is happening?

Answer = Students in the Mrs. Austin’s classroom in Georgetown, Texas, hear a thunderstorm. C/P = They heard thunder, “a rumble outside, above the roof,” the heavy rain like“a giant showerhead pouring water on the roof,” and the lightning like a “huge whip cracking.” Elaboration = These are the sounds of a Texas thunderstorm.

A = Answer the Q P/C = Prove or Cite; quote or paraphase the text to support your A E = Elaborate (only if necessary)

Is Charles honest with Chig? On your sheet of notebook paper write an answer to this question using the formula A P E

Is Charles honest with Chig? No, Charles is not really honest with Chig when it comes to why he has invited him along to the college reunion. Charles’ real motive for inviting Chig to accompany him comes out when Charles suggests that since they are so close to his grandmother’s home they should go to see her. (Do you think Elaboration is needed?) Notice: A = Answered the question! P = Paraphrased the text to support A.
