Who is Martin Luther King Jr.?

He Was… Non-violent - peacefully resistant, as in response to or protest against injustice, especially on moral or philosophical grounds. Adovocate - a person who speaks or writes in support or defense of a person, cause, etc. (usually followed by of ): an advocate of peace. Humanitarian - having concern for or helping to improve the welfare and happiness of people.

He Was… Born January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968 he was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs.

On December 1, 1955, Rosa Parks was arrested for refusing to give up her seat. The Montgomery Bus Boycott that was led by E. D. Nixon and King soon followed. The boycott lasted for 385 days. King was arrested. Because of him… During the campaign, it was concluded in Court and racial segregation ended on all Montgomery public buses. His role in the bus boycott transformed him into a national figure and the best-known spokesman of the civil rights movement.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day The national Martin Luther King Day of Service was started by former Pennsylvania U. S. Senator Harris Wofford and Atlanta Congressman John Lewis, who co-authored the King Holiday and Service Act. The federal legislation challenges Americans to transform the King Holiday into a day of citizen action volunteer service in honor of Dr. King. The federal legislation was signed into law by President Bill Clinton on August 23, 1994.

Universities and organizations around the U.S., participate in the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service. In honor of MLK, hundreds of Volunteer Centers, and volunteers across the country donate their time to make a difference on this day.
