We had a problem! The people of Maine, especially the people in the Valley, did not know where Canada began and the United States line was. In 1937 a state agent,Ebenezer Greeley came Madawaska. The Governor of New Brunswick had him arrested for arousing the people.

What Happened to Ebenezer? Ebenezer was jailed in Fredericton. Governor Dunlap of Maine said the Canadians had kidnapped Ebenezer on American soil.

What Happened? Governor Dunlap called President Van Buren who sent a message to the Governor of New Brunswick. The Canadian governor let Ebenezer go free.

John Baker John Baker had an American land deed. On July 4, 1827 he flew the American flag. He was arrested and put in jail in Fredericton. He went to jail 2 more times.

How did they decide on the border? In 1842 Canada and the United States finally decided on the lines for the border. They signed the Webster-Ashburton Treaty. In the valley they used the St. John River to separate the 2 countries. The End
