 Daily goal:  Understand how Yellow Journalism influenced America’s decision to go to War w/ Spain.  Notes Analysis-  Use your Ch 4.1 Notes to explain how Anglo- Saxonism and the desire for New Markets influenced American imperialism.

 Cuba was one of Spain’s oldest and most profitable colonies. It was a big Sugar producer.  The Spanish were harsh rulers in Cuba and rebel groups form to fight for independence.

 William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer ran competing newspapers.  Both practiced Yellow Journalism – writing stories that are exaggerated or made up to support the Cuban rebellion.  Portrayed the Spanish as evil rulers.

 Read an American Story on page 301.  Americans had invested heavily in Cuba.  The USS Maine was sent to Cuba to protect American lives and property.  The Maine then mysteriously exploded off the Cuban coast.  Who was blamed for the USS Maine disaster?

 Americans called for war using the slogan “REMEMBER THE MAINE! (to hell w/ Spain)”  Jingoism pushed the President to declare war with Spanish.

 The Spanish were poorly equipped and easily defeated.  Americans fought the Spanish in the Pacific and the Caribbean.  Theodore Roosevelt was the hero of the war for leading his cavalry group the Rough Riders.

 The United States also took Guam and Puerto Rico and payed Spain $20 Million for the Philippines.  Americans kept the Philippines (despite promising them independence).  Cuba became a protectorate of the US.

 In your notes summarize the 4 points of the Platt Amendment. On page
