Clara Barton :) Clara Barton was born on Christmas Day, 1821,in a farmhouse in the small Massachusetts town of North Oxford She was the last child in a family of three girls and two boys Her brothers taught her to drive nails, tie knots, and ride a pony bareback.

During The War:) During the war Clara helped feed and helped the wounded. The doctor s called her “the angel of the battlefield.” Clara said “While our soldiers stand and fight I can stand and feed and nurse them”.

American Red Cross The American Red Cross Society was founded in 1881 and Barton served as its first president Clara Barton oversaw assistance and relief work for the victims of such disasters as the 1889 Johnstown Flood and the 1900 Galveston Flood. Clara Barton resigned from the American Red Cross in 1904 amid an internal power struggle and claims of financial mismanagement

Accomplishments Clara Barton became a teacher in Massachusetts at the age of 17 founded her own school six years later and after ten years of teaching Clara Barton opened a free school in New Jersey

Retirement and death In 1900 Congress reincorporated the Red Cross and demanded a review of its funds Soon public pressures and conflict within the Red Cross itself became too much for Barton. She retired to Glen Echo, Maryland, and died there on April 12, 1912.
