What is Matter? Matter is anything that takes up space and has mass!

What is Mass Fred? Mass is anything that takes up space and has matter Welma. Mass

Solid A solid has a definite shape and has a fixed size. A solids particles don't go any where but they do vibrate.

Liquid A liquid has a definite shape and does not have a fixed size. A liquids particles move more freely than a solid but they are way slower than a gas.

Gas A gas has no definite shape and no fixed size. The particles in a gas move very fast and free.

Bounancy It's an upward force of water.

Measuring Matter

Metric System The metric system is based on units of 10.

Area Area is lxw it's one of the things that u can use that can help u measure matter.

Perimeter Add all four sides

Volume Describes how much space and object takes up.

Weight It's the measure of the pull of gravity.

Density It's the amount of matter in a given space.

The three R's Recycle, Reuse, Reduse.

What matter is made of.

Elements There the building blocks of matter. A substance made up of only one type of matter Gold, silver, and oxygen. Made up of only one type of matter.

Atoms Atoms are the smallest particles of an element. The atoms of one elect are alike. They are different of another element.

Mixture In a mixture two or more types of of matter are combined. Each keeps its original chemical properties. A solution is a mixture that is blended completely. Elements form a mixture. The parts of a mixture can be separated by sort by picking, filter, and evaporation.

Compound A compound forms when two or more elements are combined. The properties of a compound are different from the properties of the elements its is made of. Each element loses its properties. Some examples of compounds are water, salt, sugar, and rust.

Alloy Two or more types of matter- one must be metal. Mixing metal with another element can make the alloy stronger.

Physical Change Begins with on type of matter and ends with the same type of matter. 3 kinds of physical changes are change in position, size and shape, and state. The mass of an object stays the same. Heat energy and the lose of heat energy causes matter to change states.

Chemical Change/Chemical Reaction Changes in matter itself (start with one kind of matter and end another) The new matter has properties different than the matter u started with. Involves energy- either takes in or gives of energy. Example Penny + Vinegar vapors = copper acetate (green).
