Issues and Challenges

Adding historical data Performance Licensing Improving the Geoparser General Issues

Whens a Feature a Feature? Plus the temporal dimension!

Feature Typing Is the ADL Feature Type Thesaurus flexible enough? Does it make sense for HE/FE? Are there alternatives? Issues relating particularly to admin boundaries Lack of comprehensive compendium of modern and historical geographies

Performance - the art of the possible Need to investigate different architectures Always want responses faster but how fast should we expect a response? What are the acceptable parameters for response times? Are clients/users prepared to wait longer for answers to more complex queries?

Data Licensing HE/FE only? Additional data and licensing –What additional data should be in the gazetteer? –What restrictions are there on usage? –If specific data are felt to be needed, who should pay?

Geoparser Do we want / need a Geoparser? Technical aspects: –Improving textual analysis & placename disambiguation –Improving tools to assist in document indexing and metadata creation –Improving general performance

General Issues How do we convey the complexity of what is being attempted to the novice? How do we improve interfaces for reference use? How do we optimise machine2machine negotiations sensibly (dont want queries of the form, Give me all the features for England!!!!) ? What protocols should we adopt?

Specific Issues How to deal with variant names? Data validation/quality assurance issues? Confidence in answers provided Provenance / authority of data used to populate geoXwalk Primary name Multiple feature typing Others????
