Construction and Installation Readiness of TOTEM Roman Pots Detectors Federico Ravotti (PH/TOT) Gennaro Ruggiero (PH/TOT) LHCC minireview – 06 May 2009

Layout of the Roman Pots (RPs) system; Construction steps of the Detector Package; Readiness of the RP services. 2 Summary

Experimental layout of the TOTEM Detectors Roman Pots at 147m, 220m from the IP T1 T2 CMS T1 Inelastics Telescopes IP5 3 Roman Pots at 147m, 220m from the IP

Horizontal Pot Vertical Pots BPM Roman Pot (RP) Unit 10σ beam Detectors overlap in the data taking position Special beam pipe insertion allowing to approach the detectors very close to the beam. Compensation system allows the movement from garage position to data taking position  m thin window

5 All 8 RP Units installed in the LHC since autumn 2007 Station 220m Station 147m 2 Mechanical units = 1 Station

6 The Detector Package (DP) The Si microstrip edgeless detector The “Champignon” VFAT chips Si microstrip edgeless detector The Hybrid 5 u & 5 v oriented planes Kapton pigtail CE07 support plate Connectors to detector hybrids Roman Pot Motherboard

The RP Motherboard links the front-end to the counting room. Preliminary tests in the TOTEM Lab. Bld RP Motherboard and its mezzanines 7 DP production takes 30 days (3 DPs produced in parallel)

RP hybrid box with traveller sheet RP Production DB interface The RP hybrid test and assembly data are kept on a Database and on the traveller sheet. 8

PCB of the RP hybrid Cards delivered by EN-ICE are inspected and then the VFATs are mounted in the bonding lab. 9

RP hybrid test setup The RP hybrids together with the VFATs are tested with the Totem Test Platform (TTP). Totem Test Platform (TTP) 10

RP hybrid with VFATs and sensors all wire- bonded Pre-qualified Edgeless Silicon sensors are mounted and wire- bonded in the bonding lab. Then the sensors are tested with the TTP. 11

Computer Measuring Machine (Bonding Lab) The support bars are precisely mounted on the hybrid. The hybrid is connected again to the TTP for a test of the VFAT + Silicon sensor RP hybrid fully mounted with support bars 12

The Detector Package is assembled. The DP is tested together with the Motherboard in the Lab. Bld DCS tests are also executed here. RP Detector Package and its Motherboard 13

RP DP checked in the Lab. Bld. 555 The DP and it’s Motherboard are assembled together with the “Champignon”. A final check is then made. RP Detector Package with the Champignon 14

RP DP inserted in a prototype pot with thin window The RP Detector Package is inserted in a prototype pot with thin window and installed in a test setup in H8 for data taking. The H8 setup allow test with cosmic-rays or the SPS beam. 15

During summer 2008, the first 2 detector packages were installed in the tunnel, in the horizontal Pots of the “far” units at 220m. on both sides of IP5. Open pot in the tunnel 16 Package ready for installation Package installed (Sec. 5-6, station 220m., far unit, hor. pot)

17 POT 3 to POT 7 installed during April 2009 in the RP Station 220m Sec. 5-6 as planned! Station 220m in Sec 5-6 is now completed!

19 Cabling / Installation of Power Supplies Cabling Stations 220m. completed; Stations 147m. under completion. Low Voltage Power Supplies Control Units in USC55 are installed; Remote Units in RRs are installed. High Voltage Power Supply Crate installed in USC55; HV Patch Panel in assembly HV (CAEN) LV (Wiener) Patch Panel in the tunnel

20 Cooling and Vacuum Cooling System (EN-CV) Cooling Plant operational; Loops for 220m stations completed and tested; Loops for 147m stations completed and under test. Vacuum System All installed RP detectors under vacuum (~ 10mb). Vacuum needed to avoid condensation and to reduce stress at the window.
