 Reasons for leaving: › Wealth › Religious freedom  They settled on Atlantic Coast  The places they settled and the different geography contributed to social, economic and political diversity in America.

 There are three colonial regions  New England (NE)- shipbuilding  Middle- religious tolerance  Southern- Plantations

 Royal › Governed directly by the king  Proprietary › King granted ownership to an individual who tries to make money off of it (Lord Baltimore).  Charter › King granted the right to govern themselves

 Jamestown-1607  Founded by a joint-stock company called Virginia Company  The group wanted to get rich by selling products, and raw  materials  The colonists had to overcome bitter winters, disease, and starvation with the help of Native Americans

 Anglican Church- Official church of England  Refusing to follow the church was treason  People who disagreed with Anglican church came to America

 Were not Anglican  Came over to establish a pure church based on the bible  Sailed over on the Mayflower  Established Plymouth, Massachusetts in  Quakers founded Pennsylvania under William Penn’s leadership  Maryland was founded by Lord Baltimore for Catholics

 Established as a prison for people who could not afford their debts  Served as a buffer between Florida (Spain) and South Carolina (America)

 Virginia’s cash crop › Tobacco  NC Became known as “Tar Heels” state because the colony produced tar, pitch, and turpentine from pine trees.  Southern plantations raised crops using……?  Indentured servants and slaves  Slaves came over in the middle leg of triangular trade

 Farmers growing crops  People also relying on commerce especially in big cities › NYC  These colonies had ports for shipping products overseas

 Biggest industries? › Ship building › Fishing  Also had small family farms

 Wealthy landowners had most power in government  Bacon was attacked by Indians several times  He demanded the government help him out, and represent everyone, not just the rich

 Colonies were allowed to govern themselves  Colonial legislatures had most of the power in the government

 Some people in Salem Mass, a puritan colony were accused of being witches.  They were given a trial  If found guilt they were executed

After today’s lesson, can you answer: - How did the unique geographic landscape of each region cause the colonies to develop differently? - In what ways did the purpose and focus of settlement affect the development of each colony? - How did the diversity of the populations in each region lead to varied experiences economically, socially, and politically?
