Joseph and Jacques Montgolfier

Joseph and Jacques were brothers who were born in France. There dad was called Pierre and he owned a paper factory.

In 1782 the brothers realised that if you put hot air directly on to a paper or fabric bag then it rises.

The first balloon they made went 3000feet up into the air and stayed there for 10 minutes.

The brothers then made another balloon and sent a sheep, duck and rooster up in it to see living creatures would cope that high up in the air.

The brothers did lots and lots of experiments and eventually came up with the design for the hot air balloon.
