Macbeth is in a battle fighting for Scotland against Denmark. Macbeth & Banquo meet 3 witches – they tell Macbeth that he is going to be Thane of Cawdor and King. They tell Banquo he is going to father Kings. A messenger tells him he is now Thane of Cawdor and Lady Macbeth persuades him to kill King Duncan & blame the guards. Macbeth becomes King. Macbeth hires 2 murderers to kill Banquo & Fleance. Macbeth is very disturbed when he sees Banquo’s ghost at the dining table. He returns to the witches who tell him a) Beware Macduff b) he won’t be defeated until the trees of Birnam wood walk to the castle c) he won’t be harmed by a man born of woman. Macbeth slaughters Macduff’s family. Macduff is in England gathering an army with Malcolm. The army uses branches of trees to camouflage them as they advance on the castle. Lady Macbeth dies. Macduff, who is Caesarian born, kills Macbeth.

Macbeth The most important character in the play At the beginning of the play he is Thane of Glamis He is a brave warrior and a cold and calculating killer He is influenced by the supernatural He murders King Duncan because he wants to be King Then he kills Banquo and Macduff’s family out of fear of losing his position
Macbeth Macbeth struggles with his conscience He likes Duncan and feels that killing him is wrong Lady Macbeth talks him into it Afterwards he feels guilty Macbeth wants to be manly – Lady Macbeth persuades him by calling him a coward Later Macbeth becomes secretive and does not tell Lady Macbeth about the murders of Banquo and the Macduffs
Lady Macbeth Lady Macbeth is ambitious – she wants to be Queen She mocks Macbeth and accuses him of being unmanly She is strong and organises the murder of Duncan Then she becomes guilty and commits suicide
Banquo A warrior and a nobleman Banquo is wise, honourable, brave and fearless The witches tell Banquo that he will become the father of kings Banquo suspects that Macbeth has murdered Duncan Macbeth hires killers to murder Banquo and his son Fleance Banquo is murdered but Fleance escapes Banquo’s ghost comes back to haunt Macbeth
King Duncan Duncan is King of Scotland at the beginning of the play He makes Macbeth Thane of Cawdor as a reward for his performance in the battle His sons are called Malcolm and Donalbain After Duncan’s murder Malcolm flees to England and Donalbain flees to Ireland Malcolm gathers an army and becomes King after the defeat of Macbeth
Macduff Macduff is a nobleman and a warrior He finds Duncan’s murdered body The witches tell Macbeth to beware of him Macduff joins Malcolm in England His wife and children are murdered by Macbeth He was born by caesarean and was therefore able to kill Macbeth and make the witches’ prophecy come true
