Mathematics Pathways for Student Success in Community Colleges In cooperation with the Charles A. Dana Center

The Problem 60% of community college students who take the placement exam need at least one remedial course Lack of persistence: – Current sequence is 3-5 courses – More students are lost because they don’t enroll in the next course than from failure of any single course Topics lack relevance to academic goals and real world Only one available pathway for students, regardless of major 2

New Mathematics Pathways 3 To-and-through college level statistics A quantitative reasoning course in preparation for college level mathematics

This is More Than a Curriculum Combines research and practice Based in learning theory Supports pedagogy and professional development Removes barriers of language and literacy Assists students in persisting productively Dedicated to continuous improvement through a networked community 4

The Collaboratory A “center without walls” Researchers, practitioners, designers, students, commercial partners Shared feasible targets Shared inquiry protocols Practical analytic tools 5

It’s Not About Just “What Works” What works, for whom, under what set of conditions 6

19 community colleges + 3 Cal State University campuses 5 states: CA, WA, TX, FL, CT 7

8 community colleges 3 states: NY, OH, GA 8

Where are we going? Year 1: Initial co-development Year 2: Pilot and data-driven improvement Year 3: Continued improvement and expansion Dependent upon funding Years 3 – 5Scaling Up and Out Development of college-level Quantway course 9
