Agenda Introduction: Objectives and Purpose 2. Homework 3. Science Fair: Video Contract Calendar 4. Scientific Methods 5. Investigation: “Learning Preferences”

Objectives Students will be able to: –Recognize what a science fair project is. –Plan a strategy to carry out a scientific investigation.

Purpose Students will be able to: –Apply the knowledge gained to plan and complete a science fair project.

Homework Search/review possible topics for the science fair project. Bring the Science Fair contract and calendar signed by your parent/guardian.

Prepare for the Science Fair Video “Prepare for the Science Fair” 

Prepare for the Science Fair HMS Website 

Prepare for the Science Fair Websites –Go online Type:“science fair projects” “science fair ideas” –Go to the library Ask for help

Example: Our Investigation Observations Some people prefer to read when studying Other people prefer to listening a class to learn Certain people need to touch, move their hands to learn Problem How are the learning preferences of students in Team 8A? Hypothesis Students in Team A have different learning preferences. Experiment Determine the person’s learning preference using a survey. List the materials and describe the procedure.

Example: Our Investigation Results Organize data in tables and draw graphs. Explain the results Conclusion Explain if the results support the hypothesis and how. Communicate the Results Presentation Report Publication

Make Observations (Research) Search for information about the topic of interest.

State Problem (Question) What can be solved through investigation or experimentation.

Formulate a Hypothesis Formulate a Hypothesis : Predict a possible answer to the problem or question. Example: If soil temperature increases, then the plant will grow taller.

Experiment A procedure to test the hypothesis. The results must be measurable (quantifiable).

Collect and Analyze Results Data gathering using several trials. Results are organized in tables, and presented in graphs.

Draw Conclusions Statements that support or reject the hypothesis. Explanation of results Includes making recommendations for further study and improvements.

Communication of Results Presentation of investigation and findings. It can be done through presentations (science fair) and publications (scientific magazines).

Make Observations State Problem (Question) State Hypothesis Test Hypothesis (Experiment) Analyze Results Draw Conclusions Communicate the Results
