Engaging with schools and learning providers How can boroughs work with schools to engage young people in apprenticeships, and support the role of schools as local apprenticeship champions and employers?

Schools and Colleges in Barnet 22 Secondary Schools- 11 of which are now Academies 2 Special Schools 1 6 th Form College 1 General Further Education College

Relationships with Schools LA taking a positive and supportive stance on academy conversion Aim is to maintain strong links with schools Termly meetings with the DCS Annual meeting with Chief Executive Each school has a named learning Network Inspector Establishing a head teachers advisory group on strategy

Defining Roles on Apprenticeships: LA Employer: Address the skills needs of our staff, Offer cost effective training and recruitment, Influence and lead as large local employer Economic development: Identify and address skills gaps, Engage local employers, Promote economic wellbeing Community leader: Draw partners together, Set an example particularly for the public sector Public Authority: Address the needs of business taxpayers as well as residents Childrens Services Authority: Promote participation in learning and employment with training, Ensure the quality and sufficiency of learning Adult skills: Address the skills needs of local adult learners

Defining Roles: Schools Employer: Address the skills needs of staff, Offer cost effective training and recruitment, Influence and lead as local employer Provider of Education for Children and Young People: Provide information on Apprenticeships, Provide impartial guidance, Promote apprenticeships as one of the progression pathways, Ensure young people have the appropriate skills to obtain an apprenticeship Community leader: Draw partners and parents together to both promote and increase the supply of apprenticeship opportunities for young people, Set an example particularly for the public sector, Trainer Provider of training for apprentices

Defining Roles: Colleges Employer: Address the skills needs of our staff, offer cost effective training and recruitment, influence and lead as large local employer. Economic development: Identify and address skills gaps, engage local employers Community leader: Draw partners together, set an example particularly for the public sector Provider of Education and Training for Young People: Provide information on Apprenticeships, provide impartial guidance, promote apprenticeships as one of the progression pathways, ensure the quality and sufficiency of opportunities Trainer: Provider of training for apprentices Adult skills: Address the skills needs of local adult learners

Approach Through the Partnership group Through a well established practitioners group Through aimhigher Trained youth support workers Raised apprenticeships during regular monitoring visits to schools The LA is developing a partnership with Barnet College and an ATA backed by a memorandum of understanding

Barnet Apprenticeship Club LSIS Project ; Pilot programme for preparation into apprenticeship An extra-curricular approach to: Raise apprenticeship awareness Encourage learners across ability range to consider apprenticeships as a pathway Support young people with preparation and access to apprenticeships Developed with Woodhouse College, Barnet College, 3 secondary schools, Barnet EBP and Employers, including: McDonalds, BT, Brent Cross programme to be extended to all interested schools – well received at presentation to Secondary Heads and Apprenticeship event for learners & parents

Actions Taken in Partnership with Barnet Education Business Partnership Awareness event for Employers and Providers Awareness event for year 9 and 10 Learners and their parents – attendance 360 NAS delivered presentations to schools to support careers events

Follow up to Awareness events NAS contacted all interested employers Enquiries from students for more information forwarded onto their schools

Improvements 160% increase in the number of young people registering on the VMS 44% increase in the number of young people participating an apprenticeship 100% increase in the number of apprenticeship vacancies in Barnet
