There are rules for naming!!

 When Metals combine with non metals –Metal loose one or more electron (becomes cation Ex: Mg2 +) –Non metal gains one or more electrons (becomes anion Cl - )  These are called binary compounds  Cations are always named first  Anions are always second  Have an ide ending  Ex” NaCl Sodium Chloride

When naming Ionic compounds with Transition metals  When metals form more than one ion there are different rules(Transition Metals)  Ex Pb forms Pb 2+ and Pb 4+  We must distinguish what type of Lead we are talking about  Scientists use a roman numeral to distinguish what type of a metal is being used

How do you know the type of Lead being used?  You must examine how the ions combined  All Compounds are neutral so in PbO 2 the Pb ions must balance the O 2- ions.  It must be Pb(IV) because there are 2 O ions (from 2 subscript).  Thus PbO 2 is called Lead(IV)Oxide

Name the following  PbBr 2  PbBr 4  LiCl  MgO Lead(II)BromideLead(IV)Bromide Lithium Chloride Magnesium Oxide

What about those crazy Polyatomic Ions?  Polyatomic ions are ions that are composed of more than one element  Together they contain a charge  Ex- OH - = Hydroxide has a charge of -1  NH 4 + = Ammonium has a charge of +1  SO 4 2- = Sulfate and has a charge of -2

There are rules for naming these as well  YOU MUST LEARN TO RECOGNIZE POLYATOMIC IONS  Similar to rules for naming binary ionic compounds  Cation first then anion, but no ide  Ex: NaOH= Sodium Hydroxide  Must distinguish what type of metal it contains  Ex Fe(NO 3 ) 3 = Iron(III)Nitrate  When writing polyatomics you must put use parenthesis to determine HOW MANY of each poly atomic.

 Name the following  Cu(NO 3 ) 2, PbCO 3, NH 4 I NaCN  Copper(II) Nitrate, Lead(II) Carbonate, Ammonium Iodide, Sodium Cyanide

Compounds that contain non metals(molecules)  There are different rules when a compounds contains only nonmetals  Ex: B,C,N,O,F,  The first element in the formula is named first,and the full element name is used  The second element is named as though it were an anion  Prefixes are used to tell the number of atoms present

 Prefixes are  Mono-1  Di-2  Tri-3  Tetra-4  Penta-5  Hexa-6  Hepta-7  Octa- 8  Note, mono is not used when describing the first atom

 Ex:  CO 2  Name is Carbon dioxide N3O5N3O5N3O5N3O5  Name is trinitrogen pentoxide  PCl 3  Name is Phosphorous trichloride
