Warmup 9/24/15 Do you think it’s fair that all these chemical names are in English? Explain. Objective Tonight’s Homework To learn how to name ionic compounds p 175: 8, 9

Chemistry Naming Foldable As we continue to work on this chemistry stuff, we’re going to find there are a lot of rules on how to name chemicals. We’re going to spend the rest of class setting up this booklet and adding “ionic compounds” to it. Please note that this book does not count for your 1 page cheat sheet. Just like the periodic table, you get to have this as an extra thing for all tests.

Chemistry Naming Foldable How to make your book: Take 3 pieces of construction paper and fold them in half lengthwise like this to make a book. Staple them. Cut out some normal lined paper and stick it on each page (except the first) to give you lines to write on like this. Write “Chemistry Naming Foldable” on the first page.

Chemistry Naming Foldable Turn to the first page on the inside and copy down what you see on the next slide or write it in your own words.

Chemistry Naming Foldable Binary Ionic Compounds Binary ionic compounds are made from 2 different elements found on opposite ends of the periodic table. We can have any numbers written small after each type of element and it won’t change how it’s named. To name binary ionic compounds, do the following: 1) Take the name of the element on the left side of the table. 2) Take the name of the element on the right side of the table and write it after it. 3) Chop off the end of the second element name and replace it with “ide”. Example: NaCl  sodium chlorine  sodium chloride Example: MgF 2  magnesium fluorine  magnesium fluoride Example: Al 2 S 3  aluminum sulfur  aluminum sulfide

Chemistry Naming Practice Name the following ionic compounds: MgOLiClBeO 2 BF 3 AlCl 3 K 2 OAl 2 S 3 CaBr 2 H 2 SeBaS Write down the formula for each compound given the name: Magnesium Sulfide Calcium Sulfide Strontium Bromide Sodium Fluoride

Exit Question How would we name "MgO"? a) Megoh b) Magnesium Oxide c) Magnesium Oxygen d) Ionic Bond e) We don’t know how to name this yet f) None of the above
