1 ICAP Demil Sector Status John Follin, Demil Sector Lead February 3, 2009

2 Demil Sector Accomplishments Successful Oct 2008 Demil User’s Group Meeting (RI) New PM Demil – LTC Figueroa and Mr. Roller (Deputy) New DAC Leaders – Mr. Carney, Ty Nordquist AMCOM Issued MLRS Demil Contract to ICI Demil CACD Contract still in operational (Bombs, CBUs, ICMs, Pyrotechnics, Yellow D) 2009 Global Demil Conference will be in San Diego, Ca from May 11 through May 15 (ICAP Demil Sidebar mtgs)

3 Demil Sector Accomplishments Design for Demil (DFD) policy signed Aug 4, 2008 by Mr. Young, Undersecretary of Defense for Acquisition, Technology and Logistics 80 OB/OD sites (51 permitted) Standard Demil Technologies in use –Explosive meltout/autoclave, cutting/disassembly, reverse assembly, waterjet cutting, contained detonation, incineration/flashing furnace 12 Demil R&D Projects moving forward (8 in transition) –Plasma arc, molten salt, Mg recovery, HMX recovery, cryofracture, hydrolysis/SCWO, base hydrolysis

4 Demil Sector Issues 540k tons of demil material remaining to be processed Currently focusing on 80% of the demil stockpile (280 NSN’s) but the real problem [cost, time, technology] will be the remaining 20% of the stockpile (12,300 NSN’s) Resolving issues of 100% inspection of recyclable metals resulting from demil processes Still need a method to fast track the recycle of metals that might not be 100% deactivated to licensed metal recyclers Perception that OB/OD is the direction that is being pursued instead of investing in alternative technologies Will existing capabilities be workloaded and future alternative projects funded even if they are more expensive to operate compared to OB/OD?
