THE DAY OF THE LORD A Dispensational Perspective

The Day of the LORD 1. A Definitive Look 2. An Interpretive Look 3. A Chronological Look 4. A Spiritual Look

The Day of the LORD MajorBible Themes – L.S. Chafer Scofield Joel 1:15 Scofield Rev. 19:19 GoodResources Maranatha! Our Lord Cometh Cometh! – Showers An excellent definition: “The Day of the Lord refers to God’s special intervention into the course of world events to judge His enemies, accomplish His purpose for history, and thereby demonstrate who He is - the sovereign God of the universe (Isa. 2:10-22, Ezek.13:5,9,14,21,23,30:3,8,19,25-16).” Renald Showers 1. A Definitive Look

The Day of the LORD The Principle Illustrated The Principle Illustrated The Principle Demonstrated The Principle Demonstrated The Thematic Principle – God’s Personality Because God is a person,He reveals His truth thematically. Prophetic details descend from moods and themes.  Christmas  The Resurrection  The Second Advent These typically represent both a season and an event. Peter treats the Day of the Lord in this same way in Acts 2. In the Day of the Lord there are multiple expressions of one theme. 2. An Interpretive Look

The Day of the LORD – Interpretive Cont. God’s Intention God’s Intervention God’s Compassion The Theocratic Principle – God’s Perspective purpose First, last and foremost, the Day of the LORD is an absolute declaration of God’s purpose and intent. God will execute His will exquisitely! First, last and always, this term indicates those times when God intervenes in the events of mankind. This intervention is overt and is usually apocalyptic and military in nature. God has lovingly warned us of this coming Day throughout History. His universal analogies: Night & Day, & Travailing (as in birth.)

The Day of the LORD Before Christ TribulationPentecostMillennium 3. A Chronological Look – Key Areas

The Day of the LORD – Chronological Cont. 700’s600’s – 500’s Assyria to judge northern kingdom of Israel - Amos 5:18, 20 Babylon to judge southern kingdom of Judah – Lam. 1:12, 2:1, 21-22; Eze. 7:19, 13:5, Zeph. 2:2-3. Babylon to judge Egypt and its allies - Jer. 46:10; Eze. 30:3. Medo- Persia to judge Babylon - Isa. 13:6,9. Before Christ The short of it: God uses the nations to judge Israel and then, in turn, judges the nations for doing so.

The Day of the LORD – At Pentecost Pentecost A Cameo The Day of the Lord is not viewable during the Church Age (2 Thess. 2:1-2) However, it was viewable at Pentecost. Why? This is a New Testament prophetic cameo or pre-fillment of the ultimate “day” aspect. Acts 2:16-21 and Joel 2-3. This was uniquely for the Jews - a foretaste of the blessings which would be available when Israel repents. However, it was also reminder that Joel’s “whosoever” offer of the gospel to both Jew and Gentile was now in place. Paul affirms this in Romans 10. Note: Do not misinterpret Peter. Paul made it clear that the Day of the Lord was not then present.

The Day of the LORD – Daniel’s 70 th Week “Tribulation” 70 th Week All of Daniel’s 70th Week may rightfully be called the Day of the Lord. It corresponds with Rev The man of sin is “revealed” at the begin- ning of this period. The “Great Tribulation” aspect of the Day of the Lord is confined to the second half of the 70th week. Isa. 2:10-22, Matthew 24:21. The Great and Terrible Day of the Lord best designates the actual DAY of Christ’s return. Joel 2 and Zech. 14. 

The Day of the LORD – The Millennium MillennialDayAspect 500’s In our culture we tend to think of day as the period of time between sunrise and sunrise. The Jewish people were much more likely to reckon a day from sunset to sunset. “Evening and morning were the first day,” etc. Gen. 1 The millennial morning and subsequent day will represent the greatest time in history. After mourning, the Jews will enjoy their morning. And so will we!

The Day of the LORD 5. “By all means” Learn to use this truth in your witness. 2 Cor. 6: We are NOT of the night. 1 Thess 5: We ARE to be 3. We ARE to be watching! 1 Thess 5:1 2.We are NOT in this day. 2 Thess 2: This is a JEWISH Event. Jer. 30:7 6. Ask: Have I been overtaken by the spirit of Antichrist? 4. A Spiritual Look
