NIHR RESEARCH METHODS INTERNSHIPS The Institute of Psychiatry (IoP), a school of Kings College London, invites applications for three Research Methods Internships funded by the National Institute for Health Research (NIHR). These two months summer internships are based in London and will start at the beginning of July The internships will provide the scope to apply statistical methods in a discrete research project to apply and to gain experience of NIHR research. The interns will be supported by NIHR Research Methods Fellows in medical statistics currently hosted by the IoP. The fellows/internships are linked to the NIHR research programmes UPBEAT, IMPACT and ARIADNE. UPBEAT UPBEAT is a programme to understand the links between coronary heart disease (CHD) and depression and to pilot case management for people with those conditions. The statistical work includes the estimation of the prevalence and incidence of depression in people on CHD registers, and the design and analysis of a pilot trial of case management for people with both conditions. Statistical issues include problems of interpreting questionnaire data, e.g. distinguishing distress arising from CHD symptoms from mental illness. Contact (Department of Health Services and Population Research) for more information. IMPACT This training fellowship is focused on statistical methodology in schizophrenia research with a special emphasis on evaluation of complex interventions, causal modelling and genetic epidemiology. The fellow is currently involved in the analysis of clustered randomized controlled trials and the study of the interplay between environmental and genetic factors in complex diseases in a study to improve physical health and reducing substance use in severe mental illness in the Division of Psychological Medicine and Psychiatry. Contact (Department of Biostatistics) for more information. ARIADNE This training fellowship is focused on statistical methodology for mental health trials including methodologies for the evaluation of complex interventions. The fellow is currently contributing to the design and analysis of randomized controlled trials of eating disorders therapies undertaken in the Division of Psychological Medicine and Psychiatry as part of a programme of research into Anorexia Nervosa and Not-Otherwise Specified Eating Disorders. The fellow liaises closely with the Mental Health and Neuroscience Clinical Trials Unit. Contact (Department of Biostatistics) for more information. The successful candidates will be home or EU undergraduate student in mathematics or statistics at a UK university. Undergraduates in their second year of their degree (or third year of a 4 year degree) may apply. Undergraduates from other fields who have quantitative skills and some familiarity with statistical ideas (e.g. economics or physics) may also apply. The remuneration will be in the range of £18,000 – £20,000 per annum, pro rata, inclusive of London Allowance. To apply please send a covering letter along with your CV and name and address of two referees from your university to Dr Sabine Landau, (enquiries should be made to the fellows named on the projects above). Applicants will be considered for any of the three internships. Closing date for applications Friday 8 th April 2011
