The Early Years Born: 1342/43 Location: London Parents: His father was a prosperous wine merchant and deputy to the king’s butler and his wife Education: No detailed information is known about his early education but it is believed that he could read Italian, French, and Latin.

Military Service and Government Positions 1359-1360: Hundred Years War 1389: Clerk of the King’s Works 1367-1378: Journeyed abroad on diplomatic and commercial missions 1374: Became a government official at the port of London 1385: Appointed justice of the peace, later appointed to Parliament

Court Time 1374: Charged with rape while working at the port of London. Guilt or innocence not determined. In 1380 hr paid Cecile Champaigne to withdraw the suit. 1387: Sued for debt after the death of his wife

The Death of Chaucer For the last few years of his life Chaucer lived in Greenwich. While there, he once was mugged twice in the same day. Chaucer died in London on October 25, 1400. It has been speculated that he was murdered. He was buried in Westminister Abbey, in a part of the church that later became known as the Poet’s Corner. A monument was erected to him in 1555.
