This is a Sample Poster First Fictional Author*, Second Author** and Third Author** *Fictional University, **Another Fictional University Abstract – include Interdisciplinary connections The Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MIRSL) at the University of Massachusetts and the Electrical Engineering Department at the University of Puerto Rico are collaborating to modify Raytheon marine radars for use as meteorological radar nodes in a proposed weather radar network. This will be the first network to measure lower atmospheric phenomena in Puerto Rico. The radar consists of an antenna, a rotator, and a transceiver that will be placed on the top of a tower or building, along with a data processing system. This paper derives two important equations describing the curved earth effect on beam propagation for radar range calculation. It also describes the method used to survey the MIRSL Tilson Farm field site, as well as the eleven campuses of the University of Puerto Rico, and justifies their fixed offset antennas’ elevation angle and location. Research Objectives Solve the curved Earth signal propagation problem to obtain graphically the radars’ range distance at the eleven campuses of the University of Puerto Rico. Site surveying each campus in order to decide the height of the radar tower and the inclination angle the antenna must have, in order for the beam to point above clutter from trees and buildings. To be submitted October 2004 The Research Effort hopes to result in the following theses/dissertations: Ph.D. Dissertation: A Detailed Study of X-band Radars, Student One, Expected date of graduation: June 2007 Master’s Thesis: A Cursory Study of X-band Radars, Student Two, Expected date of graduation: June 2007 Current and Planned Industrial Collaboration We are currently working with XYZ Microwave Inc. on the design of a new X-band radar. We fabricate and test our designs at their Chip Fabrication facility. Student One has been offered a position as a Summer intern for investigating use of X-band systems in navigation systems. We are looking for an antenna testing laboratory with an anechoic chamber for antenna measurements. Student Two is seeking an Internship in any radar facility, with the possibility of securing a job after the Internship. Future Work Install the Raytheon marine radar rotator, transceiver, and antenna and design the data processing system for testing purposes. After the survey procedure in all the University of Puerto Rico’s campuses and after completing the master’s degree, I will pursue a PhD program in Electrical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst with the modification of the Raytheon marine radar as the investigation topic. Progress and Results We have designed and tested X- band microwave components for operation at high temperatures and concluded that the performance at 90 F is optimal as shown in Figure 2. We have set up a X-band bistatic radar at Tillson fam and are analyzing data received. The analyzed data has been discussed in Figure 3.
