Pre-reading questions  Have you ever tried to write a poem?  If you answer to question 1 is yes,do you think it is difficult to write a poem and where does the difficulty lie? How do you think poetry writing is different from prose writing?  If your answer to question 1 is NO, where do you suppose the key lies to writing a good poem? Background information  About the text :the text was originally written in 1978 and published plain dealer, the major daily newspaper of Cleveland, Ohio,which has the largest circulation in Ohio and is a top-20newspaper for circulation in the us.the article was reprinted in 75 reading – an anthology,1991 as an sample illustrating the writing mode of process.

Structural analysis of the text  The writer uses a mocking tone in talking about the crisis met by poets in life. Though the writer jokingly provides his readers with a method of creating a rotten poem,he is actually encouraging his readers to take a clumsy yet fundamental step in their journey to the appreciation of poetry.
