Voices of DISCOVERY Haeng-ja Sachiko Chung, Ph.D. Many of us have felt at some point in our lives that we do not quite fit into a society or a group of people. I value such experiences. They form your uniqueness. I myself was born in Kyoto as a Korean and educated in Japan until I went to UCLA. After I got a Ph.D., I conducted my research at Harvard University and the University of Tokyo as a postdoctoral fellow. I also taught at liberal arts colleges in the U.S., such as Smith College, for over a decade. One of the most memorable experiences was that my commitment to teaching was rewarded by a teaching award. I decided to come to Okayama University to join a team to build this brand-new Discovery Program. I have been working to incorporate the strengths of the U.S. and Japanese education systems. I look forward to learning with you and helping you to discover your own passion. Our Mission Discovery Program for Global Learners is a new educational program at Okayama University, starting in October This program prepares students who will contribute to global sustainability. While emphasizing bilingual education in English and Japanese in a transcultural academic community, the program aims to produce young leaders who will discover their own paths to taking active roles on the global stage. Discovery students will be offered unique opportunities made possible by the crisscrossing of existing disciplines.

Nina Evelin Schulz (an exchange student through EPOK*) I was born in Brazil but moved to Portugal with my family. Then I went to the U.K. to enter university. I studied Japanese and also took courses in Film and Television Studies there. When I was given an opportunity to come to Japan, I checked out several different universities and found Okayama was the best for me. I was a bit worried if people in Okayama were not used to meeting foreigners, but they turned out to be very nice. I have travelled to many places in Japan, but I feel at home here in Okayama. My favorite place in this university is the L-café. I know everybody here. I am trying to mingle with Japanese students, too. Myung, Chung (biology major) I came here through the Korea-Japan Joint Government Scholarship Program for students in science and engineering departments. Okayama is not as busy as Osaka or Tokyo. You can get to many places by bicycle. I had the opportunity of working as an interpreter for Okayama Prefecture, which was an interesting experience. I find Okayama University students are very open-minded. In the future, I want to go to grad school to get a Ph.D. My ambition is to become a professor of animal ethology and physiology. Mizuho Hashimoto (MP Course*) I graduated from an IB program at the International School of Amsterdam. Okayama University was the only national university at that time, which offered a fall admission. That’s why I came, and I appreciate the great hospitality here. I also joined a students’ club, which has collaborative projects with a small district in Setouchi City within Okayama Prefecture. Our campus has a large farm, and we find even goats there. They are cute! Next year I hope to spend a half year in the U.S. as an exchange student, studying business management. I am also interested in the intersection of ecology and economics. *EPOK (Exchange Program Okayama) *MP Course (Matching Program Course)
