Romans Paul’s Exposition of “Salvation by Grace Through Faith” Lesson 14a VII. God’s Righteousness: FULFILLING THE HOPE OF ISRAEL Romans 9:1 - 11:36

VII. God’s Righteousness: FULFILLING THE HOPE OF ISRAEL The last lesson focused on: A. God’s Purpose For Israel Not Frustrated By Disobedience Romans 9:1-33 Now, we will study: B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10:1-21

The nation [“them”] was unsaved (1-4) a. a.In spite of their zeal for God (1,2) Paul’s desire for Israel was that they might be saved His prayer to God was for their salvation The problem was -- they lacked knowledge

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: The nation [“them”] was unsaved (1-4) b. b.Because of trust in their own righteousness (3-4) They were ignorant of God’s righteousness They could not believe that Christ brought an end to the law They chose to ignore the evidences of the prophecies and teaching about Christ and His divine nature

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: The individual [“man”] is saved by personal righteousness (5-13) a. a.Was not possible under law (5) Righteousness through grace is possible (4) Keeping the law (living by it) was impossible

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: The individual [“man”] is saved by personal righteousness (5-13) b. b.Dependent on trust in the word of faith (6-8) The word was near them -- as close as their mouth and their heart -- for Paul was preaching it to them Men don’t need any more evidence about the Christ who offers righteousness -- they need faith in the evidence that has already been demonstrated and made available for all to investigate for themselves

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: The individual [“man”] is saved by personal righteousness (5-13) c. c.Requires personal faith and obedience (9,10) Verse 10, ”For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” “unto” means “in order to obtain” These two steps do not conflict with or exclude other steps mentioned elsewhere, such as, repentance and baptism (Acts 2:38)

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: The individual [“man”] is saved by personal righteousness (5-13) d. d.Was available to every Jew and Gentile - “whosoever”, “all” (11-13) There is no distinction between Jew and Gentile (12) Why? Because salvation is by faith, not by the law Man must call upon the name of the Lord The “caller” will be saved, for the true caller will do whatever the Lord has asked of him (13)

End of Lesson 14a

Romans Paul’s Exposition of “Salvation by Grace Through Faith” Lesson 14b VII. God’s Righteousness: FULFILLING THE HOPE OF ISRAEL Romans 9:1 - 11:36

A brief review from our last lesson... Israel’s hope fulfilled in individuals, not in the nation. (10:1-21) 1. The nation [“them”] was unsaved. (1-4) a. In spite of their zeal for God. (1,2) b. Because of trust in their own righteousness. (3-4) 2. The individual [“man”] is saved by personal righteousness. (5-13) a. Was not possible under law. (5) b. Dependent on trust in the word of faith. (6-8) c. Requires personal faith and obedience. (9,10) d. Was available to every Jew and Gentile. (11-13) Now, to today’s lesson -

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: Inspired preaching directed to individuals, not nations (14-17) a. a.The essential role of this preaching (14,15) Paul clearly list those things required to call upon the name of the Lord: Calling on Him requires believing Believing requires hearing the word Hearing requires a preacher Preaching requires that preachers be sent He quotes from Is. 52:7 to show how important preachers were in proclaiming the “good news”

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: Inspired preaching directed to individuals, not nations (14-17) b. b.Some reject this preaching (16) “They have not all obeyed the gospel” Potential salvation cannot become actual salvation until men “obey the gospel” Those who do not obey the gospel cannot Blame God, and cannot blame the messengers

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: Inspired preaching directed to individuals, not nations (14-17) c. c.Salvation is impossible to those who refuse the word (17) a. a.The Jews had heard the gospel by this time b. b.Their failure to believe it was due to their jealousness toward the Gentiles, their refusal to accept Christ (which required them to leave the old law), and their failure to accept the word of the messengers plus many other excuses

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: The Jews were informed about the gospel for all nations (18-21) a. a.God’s word was to cover the earth (18) By quoting Ps. 19:4, Paul and the other gospel preachers had given the Jews every opportunity to hear and believe the preaching They cannot offer an excuse for not hearing Paul ties God’s revelation in nature (David’s argument) to God’s widespread revelation of the gospel (Paul’s argument)

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: The Jews were informed about the gospel for all nations (18-21) b. b.Moses and Isaiah foretold of salvation for Gentiles (19,20) Moses prophesied that a foolish nation who is “not” a nation would cause them jealousy and make them angry (Deut. 32:21) Basically, Isaiah prophesied the same things in that the Gentiles would understand the gospel (Is. 65:1) while the Jewish nation did not call upon God

B. Israel’s Hope Fulfilled in Individuals, Not in the Nation Romans 10: The Jews were informed about the gospel for all nations (18-21) c. c.The Jewish nation was always resistant to God’s will (21) Isaiah continued on to show that God had tried in every way to get them to turn from a disobedience and contrary people (Is. 65:2) Their opportunity had not been diminished in the least by the offer made to the Gentiles to share in the bounty of heaven
