Read-A-thon Project Help Humanity, One Page At A Time GIFTS

Our Mission Giving Individuals A Future To Succeed

13% of people over 15 are illiterate THE WORLD SOURCE: WORLD BANK Facts

52% of those 13% live in either China or India In summary: 6.76% of the illiterate people in this world live in China or India.

The vicious cycle Illiteracy, many students drop out Low Paying Job (blue- collar) Poor Communit y, funding Inadequat e funding for Schools Poor Schooling for Kids

Our Message Through education, people can rise up from their present situation and Reading should be taken for granted; everyone deserves the right to be literate. If schools have access to books, students have a greater chance of being interested in books and becoming literate. improve their lives and the community around them.

Our current projects (Where the funds will go to) Li Ming School, to further expand their library (Last year we started the library over there) The Library Project, an organization that seeks to provide books to migrant schools in China to promote literacy SAS ‘Chinese’ library which will provide literature for the service faculty in this school (The cafeteria workers, guards, cleaning staff, etc.) New Project

Library Project-How does it work? STAGE 1 Make connection with school Identify the need for a library STAGE 2 Conduct fundraisers (like the Read-A-Thon) Raise awareness of the importance of literacy STAGE 3-Assist them in setting up of a library STAGE 4-Continue improving their library and making sure they are utilized

How do we achieve our goals? We raise money at SAS through many ways-Bake sales, Read-A- Thons, etc. All our projects are purely funded by the generosity of the SAS community.

Process of the REad-A-thon Project All the students in the Sixth Grade watch the introductory video about the project Homebase teachers hand out letters and forms to each student. The students (hopefully!) hands the letters out to their respective parents. The students make a pledge on how many minutes/hours they will spend reading (in total) Students collect sponsors to ‘sponsor’ them (anybody in the community is welcome to sponsor) Students read and read until they reach their specified target Students then collect money from their sponsors Students then on the final week hand in the money with the forms to their respective homebase teacher.

What is the teachers’ role? As teachers, please encourage the students to read actively in class or out of class. The homebase teachers, on the final day, are requested to hand all their students’ forms to Ms. Veronica.

Thank you so much for your kind cooperation!

Where will the funds go? Li Ming School to further expand their library. The Library Project Another portion of the funds will help start the SAS ‘Chinese’ library which will provide literature for the service faculty in this school (The cafeteria workers, guards, cleaning staff, etc.) New Project
