Define LAW and ETHIC ETHICS: 1. The decisions, choices, and actions we make that reflect and enact our values. 2. A set of standards of conduct that guide decisions and actions based on duties derived from core values. 3. The discipline dealing with what is good and bad and with moral duty and obligation LAW: Set of rules that a particular country recognizes as regulating the actions of its members and are enforced by the government. ETHICS AND ISSUES

BUSINESS ETHICS: 1. The decisions, choices, and actions we make that reflect and enact our values in a business context. 2. The good and bad or right and wrong behaviour and or practices that take place within a business context. ETHICS AND ISSUES

BUSINESS ETHICS Two Arguments: 1. Against Business Ethics: - Business has one goal and only one responsibility-TO MAKE PROFIT. 2. For Business Ethics : -Because business influences society, government, and individuals they need to be held ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR ACTIONS.

Intellectual Property: Intellectual property (IP) refers to creations of the mind: inventions, literary and artistic works, and symbols, names, images, and designs used in commerce. Intellectual Property Law: Protects creators from infringement or the unauthorized use and misuse of their creations. Establishes rights to and ownership of a creation and allows for the creator to profit from their creative efforts. Prevents competitors from copying or imitating a product or service. IT and Legal Issues

3 Intellectual Property Laws: 1. Copy Right 2. Patents 3. Trade Mark IT and Legal Issues

YOUR TASK… 1.Conduct research on 1 of the 3 IP laws in a group through the Canadian Intellectual Property Office ’s website. 2. Fill out the IP Guide (given to you) for your specific law and become an expert on your law. 3. And present your law to the class in a quick skit or role play.

1.Copy Right: Means that an owner is the only person who may copy the work or permit someone else to do so. Generally, copyright in Canada lasts for the life of the author and 50 years following the author's death. The kinds of works covered include: books, maps, lyrics, musical scores, sculptures, paintings, photographs, films, tapes, computer programs and databases. 2. Patents: A patent enables its owner to stop others from making, using, selling or importing such a product or process. This is a very powerful right since the patent owner could also use it to stop someone who subsequently, though independently, invents the claimed invention. A patent granted by the Patent Office of the Canadian Intellectual Property Office provides protection within Canada for up to 20 years from the date considered to be the filing date in Canada. 3.Trade-Mark: A word (s) and/or design used to identify the goods or services of one person or organization. Trade-Mark registration gives you exclusive rights to words and designs (or a combination of these) that distinguish your goods or services from those of others. IT and Legal Issues

IT and Environmental Issues -> E-WASTE - Electronics which have run the course of their useful life. Items that cannot be reused, refurbished, or recycled. - Electronics contain mercury, barium, lead and cadmium which are dangerous elements that can be found in discarded devices. - Gold, silver, and copper is also found and in order to salvage them hazardous toxins are used which accumulate in the landfill and leech into the ground -Electronics are incinerated which sends the toxic elements into the air

IT and Environmental Issues -> E-WASTE Facts and Figures - Makes up 5% of all municipal solid waste worldwide, nearly the same amount as all plastic packaging, but it is much more hazardous. - Fastest growing component of the municipal solid waste stream because people are upgrading their phones, computers, televisions, audio equipment and printers more frequently. - Mobile phones and computers are causing the biggest problem because they are replaced most often. - Mobile phones have a lifecycle of less than two years in developed countries

IT and Health Issues Solutions to E-Waste: Basel Convention: international treaty that addresses e-waste. Has helped to slow the transfer of toxic waste but lacks accountability. City of Toronto collects and recycles electronics safely, check with your city.
