The Global Community for Academic Advising Finding Your Way: Navigating the High Seas of Leadership Using Navigational Tools Specifically Designed for You

The Global Community for Academic Advising Geo-Positioning Yourself within Your Leadership Setting

The Global Community for Academic Advising Finding Your Way: As a participant in this session you will develop:  The ability to recognize navigational hazards that can set your leadership on the rocks.  A specific set of strategies on how to navigate around and through stormy waters.

The Global Community for Academic Advising Adrift in Stormy Waters

The Global Community for Academic Advising When You’re Not Aware of Your Compass Rose Dean Describes herself as effective because, “I get things done.” S 20 P 17 TR 30 C 23 Perceived by faculty and staff as, "Inarticulate and inattentive to details.” “Charges in and does things without consulting others.”

The Global Community for Academic Advising Low Tides of Leadership Avoidance of Sequence can lead to a lack of follow through and missed deadlines. Avoidance of Precision can lead to limited communication and a lack of detail.

The Global Community for Academic Advising Low Tides of Leadership Avoidance of Technical Reasoning can lead to dependence on others to solve problems. Avoidance of Confluence can lead to doing the same thing over and over and never learning from mistakes.

The Global Community for Academic Advising Pattern Over Dependence Sole Dependence on Sequence can lead to a lack of flexibility and originality. Precision can lead to the relentless correcting of others’ work which subtlety communicates that your co-workers do not meet your standards. Technical Reasoning can lead to not asking for help when you need it or not including others in the decisions to be made. Confluence can lead to unfocused meetings and incomplete projects.

The Global Community for Academic Advising Learn strategies from colleagues who use their Directional Forces differently than you. – Real experience – Debrief A Place to Begin

The Global Community for Academic Advising The Horse Latitudes of Leadership Leadership by Plodding Persistence Leadership by Micromanaging Leadership by Outrunning your Headlights

The Global Community for Academic Advising More Tools to Use Building Strategies to enhance your leadership – Identify Directional Issues – Develop a Strategy Card

The Global Community for Academic Advising An Example S 25 P 17 TR 23 C 27 You have been asked to keep the minutes for the First Year Student orientation committee meeting. – Rely on your Sequence and keep the meeting agenda close at hand to guide you. If using technology, pull up agenda on your screen. – Forge your Precision and record names, dates, deadlines, and task assignments next to each agenda item as presented. Concentrate on capturing pertinent info.

The Global Community for Academic Advising An Example S 25 P 17 TR 23 C 27 – Use TR and record the session if possible to use as a back-up for accuracy. Use cell to capture white board notes for transcribing later. – Use TR and use abbreviations, txting language to capture longer detailed info. – Use your Confluence to give you permission to check spelling and accuracy later. – Use your Confluence and TR to graphically depict concepts being discussed and label concepts with initials.

The Global Community for Academic Advising Strategizing Sequence__Precision__Technical__Confluence__ Place your LCI scores beside each of the Patterns below Record specific strategies you will use to help you FIT your patterns to the assignment. Start with small do-able strategies until you have developed a set that work well for you! Remember not every Pattern will require a Strategy. Write each key decoded word of the assignment under the Patterns to which it pertains. Write a short description of how you use each Pattern
