"Where are we?" is the question that location answers. Two types of location: Absolute Exact location. Uses latitude and longitude Relative Where a place is in relation to another place

Absolute Location or Relative Location? Paris, France is 48 degrees North latitude and 2 degrees East longitude. absolute Swansboro, NC is east of Raleigh, NC. relative

Main line of latitude is the Lines run east to west Main line of latitude is the Equator

Main line of longitude is the Lines run north to south Main line of longitude is the Prime Meridian

How can you describe the relative location of Swansboro Middle? What resource would you need to find out the absolute location of London, England? An atlas

Place What kind of place is it?  What do you think of when you imagine China?  Japan?  Russia?  Saudi Arabia?

Place Physical characteristics: Cultural/Human characteristics: *Describes the environment CLAP: Climate, Landforms, Animals, Plants Cultural/Human characteristics: * Describes the people Examples: language, religion, customs

Physical or Cultural/Human Characteristics? Physical (animals) Cultural/Human (buildings made by people)

People interact with each other through movement.

Movement What can be moved from one place to another? People: migration due to: travel, jobs freedom, weather (hurricanes), Goods and ideas: trade (imports and exports), cultural diffusion

How do humans and the environment affect each other? Interactions How do humans and the environment affect each other?    We change the environment and then sometimes Mother Nature changes it back.  For example, tornados in the mid-West, Hurricane Katrina, and earthquakes and mudslides in California.

Interactions between humans and the environment To change yourself to fit your environment Adapt: Modify: To change the environment to fit you

Adaptations or modifications?? Building roads= modification Wearing gloves and coats in Winter= adaptation Cutting down trees= modification Learning to like fish if you live by the sea= adaptation

Region A region is an area with unique characteristics *Similar physical characteristics or similar cultural characteristics Examples: oil producing region, Spanish speaking region, Buddhist region
