Apply Application Complete Experience Position Recent Skill System Technology Training Vocabulary: Employment

Application (is a) noun (it means) a written form we fill out to ask for something important, for example a job application or a college application. My brother sent his application to the college in January. I filled out an application for that job yesterday. Other forms of the word application are apply, applies, applied, and applicant.

Apply (is a) verb (that means to) ask for something in writing, (we apply for) especially important things like a job or a passport. I apply for a job. My brother applies to college. My sister applies for a loan… Other forms of the word apply are applies, applied, and application.

Complete (is a) verb (that means to) finish, (or) be done with. Tran completed a computer class last summer. Anita completed school in Mexico. Other forms of the word complete are completes, completed, and completion.

Experience (is a) noun (that means) time you spent doing something. You could get experience from a job or from another part of your life. John has been a teacher for twelve years. He has a lot of classroom experience. My sister has four children, so she has a lot of experience with childcare. Other forms of the word experience are experienced and experiences.

Position (is a) noun (that means) place or location; (it can also mean) a specific job. What position did Mary apply for? Mary applied for a position as an administrative assistant. Other forms of the word position are positioned and positioning.

Recent (is an) adjective (that means) not long ago. I got a paycheck last Friday. That was my most recent paycheck. Lin worked at the school until last week. The school is her most recent employer. Another form of the word recent is recently.

Skill (is a) noun (that means) something you can do well, something you are good at. I have excellent computer skills because I have taken classes in many computer programs and worked in an office for ten years. Another form of the word skill is skilled.

System (is a) noun (that means) parts that work together. My stereo system has six speakers. The school system includes elementary schools, middle schools, and high schools. Other forms of the word system are systematic and systemized.

Technology (is a) noun (that means) tools that use scientific knowledge. New technology has changed the way cars work. For example, new cars have computers, electric locks, and airbags. Other forms of the word technology are technical and technological.

Training (is a) noun (that means) learning how to do something new. Amir is attending training to become an electrician. He is learning how to build and fix electrical equipment. Other forms of the word training are train, trains, and trained.
