EU-US Workforce Development Workgroup Global Health Workforce Council Update – December 2014

Global Health Workforce Council Sponsored by the AHIMA and IFHIMA through a grant by the US Department of Commerce The goal of the GHWC is: – to establish a global health information curricula and competency standard – to provide a framework for healthcare and education systems worldwide – to update and/or build a workforce development strategy – The GHWC includes representatives from all six WHO Regions GHWC Members:

Release of Global Curricula Draft for Public Comment On November 21, 2014, the GHWC released the Draft of the Global Academic Curricula Competencies for Health Information Professionals It is a resource for academic programs across health information professions including Health Information Management (HIM), Health Informatics (HI), and Health Information and Communication Technologies (HICT)

The overarching goal of the initiative is to articulate a common global language between education and industry to develop competency-based curriculum, certifications, and training initiatives which will assist in the development of a global e-health workforce Release of Global Curricula Draft for Public Comment

This has been a significant milestone for the Council to achieve in the six short months they have been working together This first version provides a foundation for evolving/improving the global curricula and a mechanism to provide leadership in developing an e-health workforce globally Release of Global Curricula Draft for Public Comment

There are two versions, a 53-page PDF and a 53-page Word rich-text formatted version There are 28 modules, or competency domains Each module is organized into curricular content, which contains both academic and other considerations, framing the guidelines that support competency requirements and related Blooms level Release of Global Curricula Draft for Public Comment

Global Curricula Design and Organization The global curricula is designed in a modular format to allow flexibility by academic programs Guidance on reviewing/commenting on the module is provided below: – Module Title: Describes the content area – Module Overview: A brief statement that summarizes the scope of the competencies for the module. – Competency Level: Each academic level is meant to stand on its own and not build from entry to advanced. Entry level equates to an entry level academic programs such as a two-year Associate degree, the intermediate level to academic programs such as a four-year Bachelor degree, and the advanced/graduate level to academic programs such as Master or Doctorate degrees. We are soliciting the following types of feedback and comments: – Comments on the front matter (e.g., forward, overview sections, etc.) – Comments on the Curricula Modules – Submissions of additional curricular modules for considerations – Comments on appendices and models/examples – Comments on current and future integration/alignment with EU-US Workforce Development Workgroup competencies and HITCOMP tool*** – Other general feedback Submit comments through the EU-US Workforce Development Workgroup WIKI: Comments from our group are due January 8, 2015 and will be consolidated and submitted on January 15, 2015 to the GHWC ***Feedback is specific to the EU-US eHealth/Health IT Workforce Development Workgroup Release of Global Curricula Draft for Public Comment
